Probably the most atmospheric game I've ever played, and one of the best single player experiences I've delved into. It has a fantastic way of pulling you in, and getting you on edge, then delivering with intense gunplay. Visually, this game is top notch, and your rig will be pushed to it's limits. The sound design perfectly creeps up on you, and your own character's heavy breathing, coupled with the occasional unpredictable monster growl, gets the adrenaline pumping like nothing else. If your PC can handle it, give this game a go, it really doesn't get the attention it deserves. (And it's -really- cheap on Steam sales)
Super Meat Boy is a super fast and fluid hardcore platformer that will push your timing, reflexes, puzzle solving, and nerves to their limits. Each stage begins as trial and error, as you continuosly make mistakes and die, again and again, you being to develop a "optimal route" through the level. Once you figure out the best possible passage, you then must actually execute it, which can be 10x harder.
The physics of the game are absolutely fantastic. Meat Boy runs and jumps with such perfect weight and balance, the game is really rewarding just to play with. Across 6 sections of 20 levels, there are light and dark worlds, with the dark cranking everything up a notch, and really putting your skills to the test. The game's length is staggering, if you take into the account the user created stages.
If you're a masochist who loves tough as nails platforming, play this. You'll love it.
One of my favorite games this gen. The gunplay is not quite up to standard as far as an FPS, but it more than makes up for it with the incredibly eerie atmosphere. I did a lot of looting and exploring, but the game can be played straight through relatively fast. Plasmids, various chemically powered attacks that range from fire and ice bursts to hypnotization and bees, accompany a standard array of guns and weapons, with a cool and interesting fresh gun thrown in from time to time. The game features well-designed sequences that lure you in, then scare you, but never quite on the level of a horror game. The story is interesting to say the least, with a sharp, and fantastic twist. The game is remarkable in that almost every scene is experienced with you in control, allowing you to freely move about on your own while events happen. All in all, if you enjoy mildly scary shooters, with a miniscule dash of RPG, Bioshock is the way to go.
