"Fuck bitches, get money," he said with a menacing grin, "give me that golden shield, or I will beat you within an inch of your life."
*insert overbearing anime quote/paragraph of dumb cartoon philosophy about death or how awesome insanity is here*
*insert more shitty "*insert X here*" here*

There's a shitload of indie 2D platformers with silly quirks and irreverent references to 2D games of yore, but VVVVVV stands tall above most of these games. It's quirk is that you can't jump, but you can flip the gravity, so the celing becomes the floor, and vice versa. The quirk actually significantly changes the gameplay of the standard platformer, which is more than can be said for a lot of other games. The developer's found a lot of inventive ways to use the mechanic, both in the "wow that was so much cooler than just jumping" and the "how the fuck am I going to do this without jumping" categories.
As for the actual game's style, think Metroid without the upgrades (The game's map, general openness and feeling of isolation, especially) and with some classic Megaman mixed together. (It's difficult, but it controls well, and the simple graphics help the smoothness of the gameplay rather than warp it.)
It's cheap, fun, and you'll feel a huge amount of satisfaction on completing it.
Trine is a fantastic physics platformer, and belongs in any gamer's library. Reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country in its charms, 3d on 2d art and character swapping.
