Great asymmetric multiplayer game that is equally fun to play on both sides. I also like the design philosophy of keeping the main gameplay loop & killer abilities simple and easy to understand, which makes it highly accessible for casual play, but still offering enough depth and complexity in its core mechanics for a wide skill ceiling.

Definitely one of the better multiplayer games out there and I have ignored it for years, what a shame.

The game is not working properly on AMD cards. Hasn't been fixed after all this years and never will be fixed.
You need to manually reset your shader-cache constantly while playing, otherwise the game will crash with the error message: "Err008: Memory Overrun".

You'll encounter the first crash in episode 4 if you don't reset your shader-cache up to this point. I recommend a reset after every chapter and after every elevator you take if you don't want to risk a crash.

Valve be like: Hey fellow PC-Gamer, you ever heard of something called a “C-O-N-T-R-O-L-L-E-R”? It has X,Y,A,B buttons, shoulder buttons and two analog-sticks which… I know it sounds crazy, but you can actually tilt them in any direction you want! It probably sounds a bit far stretched but you might be able to play games with this magical device!

But in all seriousness, it’s a charming introduction for the steam deck.

Horrible game. This was marketed as an PvEvP stealth heist game but it actually turned out to be a completely bland team deathmatch with underwhelming PvE elements.

You can technically go stealth at the start of the game, but it’s actually nearly worthless due to its winning conditions. Some players stated in the discussion forums, that going stealth can give you a huge advantage, but I absolutely can’t see it. Every game I played was nearly the same. Everyone was rushing constantly through the map and if someone wanted to go stealth, it had absolutely no impact over the course of the match. But even if the stealth part would be more rewarding and rushing through the map would be punished, it’s still feels bland and badly executed. The AI is also ridiclously stupid.

But let’s talk more about the mentioned winning condition:

For winning the game, you must secure the treasure. You do so, by stealing a key from a guardian, opening the treasure room, bringing the treasure to an extraction point and then completing a completion bar.

The joke about it: It doesn’t matter who gets the key first or who brings the treasure to the extraction point first. If Team A does 99% of the heist, but Team B completes the last 1%, then team B wins the game completely. So, you can basically go AFK for nearly the whole game and can still win the game entirely with ease - maybe with less rewards but a win is a win. Who on earth thought that this is good game design? This game also had several closed-beta events beforehand, which makes it even more ridiculous.

After getting the treasure to an extraction point, the game turns into a repetitive experience. That’s why I said this feels more like a team deathmatch rather than a stealth game. You go to the extraction point, fight, die, respawn and so on. The most part of a match, is exactly that: just a boring team fight over and over again. But are the fighting mechanics at least good? Absolutely not, the fighting mechanics are super clunky, sometimes glitchy and even if they work properly, they are super dull. I also can’t see any synergy across the characters ultimate attacks, everything stands for its own and I don’t see any greater teamplay in there.

The technical aspects are also… weird? The game is capped @62FPS. Why 62? Don’t ask me. A multiplayer focused game (maybe with eSport in mind) released in 2021 that has capped fps, is just confusing me.

I also found the matchmaking problematic. I’ve often waited for several minutes until I found a lobby. For a game that just released, this is really alarming. If you still want to try out this game, keep a sharp eye on the player numbers, I have the feeling that no one will play it in a couple of weeks.

Not a bad game but the microtransactions are just ridiclious.

This game has every mechanic you can imagine to squeeze out every single penny from the player.
It has several starting editions, regular ingame purchases, exp & credit booster, FOMO mechanics & gacha elements. (Season Passes with an attached VIP status was also a thing)

Considering how many microtransaction mechanics are in place, this game should be free2play, but it isn’t. They’re also locking operators (which is a key gameplay element) behind a pay or grind wall. What a joke.

Early Access Review
After you get used to the mechanics, the game gets boring really fast. It’s an execution of the same things over and over again (thermo for ghost location, throwing everything as fast as possible into the ghost room, taking sanity pills and finally searching for evidence) while some sort of elements, are random, the core gameplay isn’t. It’s predictable, and predictability kills the horror aspect completely. You get the most fun out of Phasmophobia in the first couple of hours. Playing the game with friends who also don’t know anything about its mechanics is a hilariously fun experience. But as soon as everyone knows what to do and knows how things behave, the game loses its interest and appeal very fast. But because of its unique multiplayer concept, it’s definitely a game I still would recommend to anyone who likes horror games.

And yes, it’s in Early Access and I don’t want to be too pessimistic but I don’t think that the game will change drastically over the course of its development. I hope to be proven wrong, but we will probably only see some new ghost models, a couple of new maps but not a dramatically improvement in its gameplay elements.

Story full of cliches, tropes and an incredibley forced plot-twist. All decisions made in the game and how characters are behaving is just plain stupid. I absolutely can't imagine that somone who already saw more then three action flicks will find the plot exciting or intriguing in any way. Also the huge selling point of the game, the coop gameplay, is just horrible. It's ridclisouly easy and doesn't require any way of coordination or tactic whatsover. You basically can't fail in this game. It's an interactive movie that plays itself and not a fun coop experience.
I give the game some credits for the first chapter (the only good part in the game) and the overall idea. "A Way Out" could have been so much better if they had focused more on the main aspect of the game and made the gameplay more complex and challenging, but they rather decided to put their effort in creating a generic plot to make it more cinematic and appealing to a wider audience. At the end of the day it fails on both ends.
