Short Round: What is Sankara?
Indiana Jones: Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.

(INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM)

This game truly deserves it reputation. What I've been most impressed by is the story telling, writing, acting, in engine cut scenes and facial animation. It's more than outstanding. I was really pulled into the story which has the right balance of fantasy compared to being based on more real world elements like the culture and mythology. The characters are more nuanced and human than you'd even get in a film. Maybe SOTTR could be seen as a point where video game story telling has really found its place. A good movie is great, but here there's more time to dwell on emotional scenes without rushing it. Lara Croft is handled brilliantly. She's deadly and bad ass but still retains her female charm and femininity. The game play provides an excellent balance of exploration, action and puzzle solving. Some of the tombs are truly epic with impressive mechanisms and set pieces. The campaign is very long as it should be. So SOTTR is one of those truly epic almost perfect games. Fortune and glory.

Borderlands 1 surpasses itself. As a creative piece of work it has a story and RPG/FPS dynamic that grows as the game proceeds. Level design is clever and builds the story and atmosphere as does the music. It takes a while to get used to the enhanced edition but after a while locations seem refreshed yet the original quality is maintained. BL1 is one of those games that's difficult to surpass. The sequels are good but somehow lack the "whisk you away" atmosphere that the first one has which is now updated in this edition. It's a bit like Far Cry that somehow managed to surpass itself and say something beyond a simple video game in Far Cry 2. The sequels to that never reached the profundities of the second outing. It's the same here with BL1. The game goes beyond and starts "saying things" and tapping into things that the original creators probably never imagined, like any good creative work. Highly recommended !

Contracts 2 actually reminded me of some Crysis 3 levels I thought I'd long forgotten. It especially reminded me of Sniper Elite 3 but that might just be the desert setting. There's some Hitman in there but not as much as Contracts 1. Whatever crossbreeds you want to mention CI Games are giving Rebellion a run for their money ! Although Contracts 2 veers more towards the Splinter Cell side of things. Stealth and sniping are important. However you can run and gun but this is much more difficult ! But "classic" FPS fan's will not be disappointed. The game is really a homage to legendary shooters but with some savvy marketing for todays industry. I means there's even a Hitman Contracts if anyone has any doubt about what's going on here. But CI's game is not a cynical (and irritating) marketing ploy that we've seen from the likes of Ubisoft and EA. The game mechanics are wonderful. Everything is a pleasure to use. Map design is excellent and non-linear with hidden caves and tunnels at every turn taking you by unexpected routes across the map. The story is not some triple A dirge meant to sell games at expensive launches. It's designed to draw you into the level design and game play. It feels like you are on some obscure, hidden, blacks ops thing (well, you're a mercenary really) in places the international community have forgotten how to care about (shades of Far Cry 2). Altogether highly recommended and worth suffering through CI Games twists and turns over the years to get here. Contracts 1 ain't so bad either.

I only ever played Halo 2 seriously and Combat Evolved for about 5 minutes. I saw that Halo 2 had been re-released and decided to go for it. These aren't normal "remastered" versions. There's a lot of features here and the graphics have been carefully updated. Halo 2 is really a whole new game. It's two games in one. The original and a version that has really been completely redone for today. The other games in the collection are also brilliant such as Halo Reach. It escapes me why I did not play these games when they first came out (apart from Halo 2) as Bungie and the other FPS Halo games are really one of the few quality campaign based franchises left out there. I hope shed loads of HMCC is sold as it might encourage other developers to start making original FPS's again with a proper campaign. Online multiplayer is great but nothing can beat the artistic and story telling ability of a good video game !

UPDATE: *Don't* use the Improvement Project part in this mod - https://www.moddb.com/mods/sniper-ghost-warrior-3-improvement-project/ - until it is fixed. ONLY use the patch part as the improvement parts actually creates more bugs.

Worth investigating.

So. A game release with a lot of bugs is never a good idea. It even took a community effort to fix most of the game (search for Improvement Project Mod) with some glaring bugs still awaiting fixes such as not being able to get off the bottom of many ladders. Falling outside level geometry and others. However it would be a shame to get obsessed about this games problems as actually there is a fun game buried in the middle of all this. SGW3 is basically a Far Cry 4 clone in some ways although it's no way near as carefully developed as that game. But the basic fun combat game loop is in the game along with some surprises. At one point when the AI enemy soldiers were on full alert and I was on top of a block of flats sniping at them below, suddenly it was if they had all disappeared. Sigh, I though, another game bug ? But no. On careful examination the AI were all studiously hidden behind cover. As you'd expect if you were under sniper fire. One soldier gave the game away by just being visible. Exploding things and firing off a few rounds usually brings them out of cover. This theme continues with the level design. The open world feels solid and interesting. The weapons are all modelled very well. They feel dangerous. Sound effects are loud. Game UI is clear. Voice acting is OK and the story is standard military fare (but that's why your here, right ?). So the verdict. If you can't stand having to apply a few fixes and playing around a few bugs then leave this and get the next game in the franchise which was better received. But if you are interested in this kind of game or just desperate to shoot anything you can get in your sights then go ahead. SGW3 shows it is possible to produce a solid open world military shooter game. What CI Games did get right in this game should be commended above Ubisoft's often overblown adventures with Ghost Recon which started with Ghost Recon Future Soldier. GRFS had an excellent weapon customisation system that was then rendered useless by the inappropriate COD-like game play. Ghost Recon Wildland's, although having the customisation system, really dispensed with any tactical game play. It's sort of "pseudo tactical". Don't get me wrong. I had a blast in GRW ! But CI Games show what was good about all the military shooters of the past. In fact this is what SGW3 strongly reminds me of. Farcry 1 and especially mods made for that game and others. It has the same quirky feel to it where people have been left to be creative rather than following some marketing profile. Although here where the problems might have been excused for a free mod, this is a commercial game. I hope CI Games goes back to the open world concept if Contracts is successful enough to mean they have more resources to better tackle the genre next time.

Amazing mod. Sort of the love child of Battlefield 2 and Company of Heroes. In fact Black Sand Studios are known for a lot of BF2 mods. The AI is very good. The mod sort of has its own game play style where battles build up into enormous fire fights. I don't know if that's any more so than vanilla COH. Is it the sound effects ? Audio is sharp and aggressive. Calling in the Apache heli or dropping in soldiers that repel down from a helicopter is super cool. The Moddb page shows there were plans to update the mod. Maybe if enough demand it it will go ahead ? There are also some bugs that need fixing although none being major game killers. After an AI game load from save some units have weapons missing (holding invisible weapons) but new units are OK. So. Modern Combat is an explosive good time !

I'm a sucker for any FPS so, yes, you can run around and shoot things and blow things up. But the superlative praise for the game is just completely over the top. RTCW knew how to build atmosphere and keep the balance between a simple WW2 game and Wolfenstein's more fantasy elements. Wolfenstein 2009 was much more violent than this outing. Also in the 2009 one enemies said funny things to you like "Frightened American?" and "Surrender now and I'll make your death quick!". There was a sardonic satire to the whole thing. In Colossus you might hear a few conversations between soldiers but its not very interesting. The collectables are hardly worth it. They story is heavily laden with pathos. Even the music does not add to the game being heavily a sort of techno punk with no emotional content (compare with Wolfenstein 2009's amusingly bombastic orchestral scores). Then it get's worse and worse with one more lurid story element after another which eventually got on my nerves with an over extended trip down memory lane. A overly moralistic exploration of a Father son relationship which really adds nothing to the game at all. Just about worth it if you can get this in a sale, but I hope Wolfenstein returns to its roots.

So after 4 hours I'm loving this game. JC4 is much more like the first Just Cause in it's "arcadey" style. It also reminds me of Mercs2: World in Flames. However I had to battle my way through the "mixed" judgement on JC4 as well as the supposed "awful" graphics. Of course there are a few problems. The major one is the colour palette that threw me to begin with. It's just an odd selection of greens compared to JC3's much more nuanced colour palette. But Reshade can be used to adjust that. Then, most glaring of all, is the missing tesselated water and some mediocre quality water shaders. But frankly WHO GIVES A FLYING KANGOROO ABOUT IT !!! Seriously. It would be shame to take the "glass half empty" approach to this game as the open world is great and the game play mechanics are a huge improvement. The guns sound better and performance is up on the engine. There seems to be a trend that has been growing driven by these professional game moaners (I have to ge this off my chest!). After paying their money they have every right to communicate with the developer but its got a bit over the top. I've seen the same thing with Rage 2 with this "empty open world" nonsense. New flash: It's a post apocalyptic wastland ! What do you expect ? Carnivals ? The same here with JC4 ... "The graphics are awful, the graphics are awful" repeated ad infinitum. Sometimes I wonder if we are all hypnotising each other. So cut loose. Stop looking for imperfections. Don't listen to the detractors and spoil sports, and JUST PLAY THE GAME. It's well worth it.

CORRECTION: Water tessellation does appear in much more open ocean areas. It's not immediately obvious because it's more restrained than it was in JC3.

RECOMMENDED: Fix the FOV ! - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1895309115

I returned to this game to compare with the Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017) campaign. Force Unleashed is a great game in comparison, as I thought it would be. What clued me up is some of the space battle scenes in SWBF2 that are visible outside when you are inside structures. They just never looked "right". I go into SWFU and the background scenes are perfect. Lot's to look at with bright looking plasma bolts. Also SWFU has some humour in it ! Look at the training drone cut scenes. Humour seems to be absent from SWBF2. Also SWFU is one of a few games that actually lived up to all the hype. I can remember watching the dev video's with them explaining and showing off all the destruction. The final game has all that along with well thought out moves and game play mechanics. I wonder if the negative reviews of SWFU are really to do with this tired old PC fan boy elitism. So SWFU was primarily a console release. SO WHAT ?! So it needs a fix to get 60fps. SO WHAT ?! It's easy to install. So the fix leads to "force object rising up as you hold it" thing. SO WHAT ALREADY !! Once you take that into account throwing objects is just as easy, in fact EASIER because it's a 60fps.

So bottom line. SWFU has THE SPIRIT OF Star Wars in it much as Jedi Academy and games like that had. Whereas Disney is in a sore danger of losing that Spirit in things like SWBF2. This is of course due to Star Wars losing it's guide and mentor, George Lucas (his absence is conspicuous even though he it still listed as "adviser" by Disney). Someone or some group needs to step in to fill the void. In the meantime we have games such as this to remind us how to do it right.

It seems like a good piece of software until you actually have to use it for an extended period of time. Then the bugs start. If the bugs had been fixed in this version then everything would be fine but they have not. Putting new features in a new version. I can understand that. I might pay for a new version later on. But keep fixing bugs in the old version ! I'd suggest not using this software otherwise you will get into a lot of frustration (movie editing is challenging enough already). Look at alternatives that will have the bugs patched and not leave users stranded on a buggy old version (that you are paying for remember). There are better and as affordable video editors out there these days. I have started looking at Kdenlive.
