You start off the game with a very basic tutorial, the tutorial does the best it can to explain this very complex game in a short period of time. Although anyone who has played games of this nature (strategy) before won't have much of an issue getting right in the thick of things and killing enemies like a pro.. Unfortunately if you aren't familiar with the strategy board card games you may find yourself at a slight disadvantage. Although the game isn't difficult enough to prove too much of a challenge, you can probably luck your way through the first few battles. It does pick up in difficulty as you move along, but stays relatively on the easier side of things.

[Edited] It's been brought ot my attention that this isn't a direct port of the IOS version of the game,[edit off] I don't see anything wrong with mobile ports and this one in particular doesn't really seem to suffer from any issues stemming from the mobile game. I can't personally comment on how close this game is to the mobile game as I've never played the mobile game.

The game is broken down two major areas, Elven Ruins and Chaos Wastes, each of these (i'll call them realms) realms consist of 8 chapters, which you select via a main menu. The game has 9 unique wizards which you can unlock various ways (you'll start off with 2 wizards) 4 of those wizards are considered "paid content" and only available if you pay 3.99 to unlock them. While they aren't necessary to complete the game, seeing those 4 wizards locked away can be tough if you're the type who likes to collect everything. I didn't personally see anything kept from the gamer by not owning the wizards.. except a single achievement.

Also in the game is additional paid content, (aside from the Wizards) you can buy in-game gold, and also you can buy an expansion Jungles of Lustria, which I've been told also unlocks a 10th Wizard. Furthermore the game has Golden Plunder Packs, which cost 1.99 and are slightly upgraded versions of the plunder packs which drop in game and can be purchased using game coins. (The Golden Plunder packs have a chance of dropping in game as well, although they are far more rare than the normal chest) While all the paid content may be a bit unnerving to say the least, the game's base price is only 3.99, and can give you hours of game play without the need to spend any additional money. So while the paid content is there, it's not distracting and you get enough scrolls (spells) and gold just by playing the game normally.

Your main party consist of three Wizards, (max party size), each equipped with their own personal spells, and a few other cards containing spells which are of the one time use variety, these come from chest, etc.. The combat is set up like any other strategy turn based combat game. You select your units, choose what you'll have them do... attack (pick a card from that Wizards deck, then select an enemy and there you have it) move.. (you are given certain number of squares you can move your character), or you can choose to end your turn and allow the enemy to take their turn.

So should you get the game? That is the million dollar question, while it does have some practices which I'd normally frown on, the price tag (3.99) is very reasonable, the game was pretty much bug and glitch free, and provided you like the strategy card game genre you'll get hours of fun and challenging game play.

Pros -
Fun and challenging,
Not an overly complicated learning curve
the game is difficult enough to provide fun for even the best players, but still pick up and play..

cons -
Some micro-tranactions
Graphics are kind of mediocre,
Words on the cards are slightly blurry (although that could have been my pc? I'm not 100% sure) this can make picking which spell to use rather problematic.

I will recommend this game, it's fun, cheap and will give many gamers hours of fun, the only thing it's missing is trading cards.

Fine review but I did want to correct something, from the developer himself:

Welcome to Warhammer: Arcane Magic - PC & Mac version
We developed this game on and for PC (and Mac) and used the iOS version to iterate on gameplay. For those that tried the launch iOS version, you will see that the game is now in a very different and improved state compared to what we started off with. Not only that, we launched the game on iOS at $9.99, and tomorrow we're launching here at $3.99 (and additionally there is a 15% launch-week discount). The PC version also has a lot of improvements over the original iOS version, including highly improved graphics.

All the best,
