As he waited in the living room
she crossed toward the sink
poured a glass of water
and set it on the counter.
She looked at the glass
and tapped it gently on the side
She took a seat next to it,
and in a voice low enough that only the glass could hear
she began cursing all the worst words she’d ever known.
All the “shits” and “fucks”
and extensions thereof.
She told the water it was worthless,
it was disgusting.
It was stupid.
She screamed that the water was sick
and it would never get better
no matter how hard it tried.
Never ever, in a hundred million years.
She called the water racist names,
cursed its family,
its religion
and all of its deepest hopes,
cursed them all to hell.
Then she stood and gripped the glass tightly
like the collar of an enemy captured in battle,
and crossed back into the living room.
As he reached out for it,
she smiled a bit.
She didn’t know anything much about science
or how it worked
but she knew what she wanted him to feel.
Anything but refreshed.
