The enemies do have different hexes that they cast and their fate streams are different from each other (how cluttered they are, ratio of hexes to chargers, if strikers are already present without you needing to create them...)
You can also combine hero strikers of the same color together.
Did you ever spend your EXP points in the store to upgrade your heroes either?
There is story as well. It tells you about how the Dark One was summoned and why the heroes are trying to defeat it, and if you check the Bestiary there are snippets about each monster and the heroes themselves.
I've played it both on PC with a mouse and on a touchscreen, and while the touchscreen is absolutely superior, it is possible to enjoy it while playing with a mouse. Maybe try giving it another chance through Steam Link if you have a smart phone or tablet.
1.4 hrs on record
You should really give the game a second try...
