It's part class-based third-person shooter, part realtime strategy, and part tower defense; the latter two less so than the original.
It's a great game, in which staying alive is qute important, and getting a kill is a big thing.
Oh, and you can level up, but it only lasts as long as you are in the game.
Oh, and characters are customizable to a certain degree.
Oh, and they JUST RELEASED A 16th CLASS!
