I'm awesome... or I really like cookies.

I'm a big fan of them old graphic adventure games. This brings back memories: low resolution, similar mechanics as in the olde days, and the same kinds of puzzles. Add to that some surprisingly good voice acting, an interesting and very dark story, and (for the most part) puzzles that are not too easy nor too hard... and you've got a winner.
Right from the first scene, you learn that something really, really horrible is going on, and that's just the beginning. But before you learn more, you are thrown into the other narrative thread...
Purists be warned: there are shooting scenes, some of them slightly tricky. There are some small glitches in the controls but they can be worked around, and the only real frustrations (apart from "this is too far away, I have to move closer first"-style compulsory micro-management) are two puzzles that take some fairly precise timing.
If you really like adventures, do check this one out.
This RPG was developed by people who were involved in the Diablo series, and their experience shows. The colourful, comicy art style may not appeal to everyone (I'm not a huge fan myself), but the gameplay mechanics are great: many annoyances from other RPGs have been eliminated. For example, you can send your pet off to sell items while you keep exploring... and, unlike in Diablo II, your town portals stay alive across games (until you re-enter them).
To me, the best thing about the game is that it includes an editor, and many aspects of the game can be customized. There are hundreds of mods available on the 'net, so chances are that if something bugs you about the game, someone has already changed it.
If you're really into Diablo-style RPGs (not counting the visuals), you'll probably like this one.
Since this game (and a bundle including episode two) is on sale for almost nothing right now, this might be a good time to point it out. Story (and wackiness) courtesy of Penny Arcade, this is a weird mix of adventure game, RPG and mini games. Everything is really oddball about this, from the story to the design of NPCs and scenery. "Cut scenes" are comic style, action itself is in 3D. If all this weirdness doesn't turn you off, you should definitely check out the game (and the second episode). Unfortunately, the foreshadowed third and fourth episodes probably aren't going to happen.
Note: game only available in English.
