Game's not good!

And I love choose-your-own-adventure stories. I love interactive fiction. I grew up slowly digesting dog-eared Fighting Fantasies and wishing I had a D&D group. I read through Choice of Robots and Choice of the Deathless, gobsmacked and spoiled by how great they were. And this crap phones it in.

I think half the reason why I'm literally angry at how not-good this game is stems from just how much potential star-captaining has in a structured and stat-based interactive fiction environment. You can fully embrace and love what makes Space Opera a worthwhile and effective genre... or you can do what this game does, and tack half-thought-out sci-fi tropes on top of a stupefyingly standard war story. This game takes all the majesty, the potential, the infinite wonder of the universe and makes something disgusting out of it.

I didn't care about any of the characters. I didn't care about the universe. Nothing mattered and this game was bad.

Buy better games.

No jokes. No fooling. This game is good times.

This is fun, well-realized retrofuture adventure gaming that fully embraces the absurdity of being able to Use Guy and Talk To Door and, somehow in there, makes salient and legitimate points about the social value of sapience and the nature of humanity. It's like walking through your own Total Recall Schwarzeneggerriffic 80's sci-fi movie, except gunning people down isn't the point and a huge amount of emotional appeal is invested in a carton of spoiled milk.

Also: It has one of the most legitimately harrowing final bosses I think I've encountered. I actually laughed, and actually cried.

Playing this game is a favor you do for yourself.

Gems.
*breaks into your house, raids your mom's jewelry box, makes off with her wedding ring*
Gems? Gems gems.
*snorts a crushed-up grade 12 black-white gem*
Gems, gems gems! Gems. Gem-gem gems.
*eviscerates your grandmother, rooting through her intestinal track for kidney stones*
Gems're nice.

A stunning narrative experience. One of the best pieces of writing I've encountered, in and out of the medium of game. It's a very, very strong interpretation of Shadowrun, hampered only because it makes me want to immediately run out and play some tabletop Shadowrun.

The fact that I own this game is the reason why I can never run for public office.

Well, that and all those bodies. But I'm pretty sure the pigeon sex doesn't help.

Minimalist. Beautiful. Difficult. Strange.

As is this review.

I hope.

It's fun! It's colorful! It references nerd culture in such a recursive navel-gazing fashion that the lore actually seems original!

Then the boobs bounce.

I am a traitor to my entire gender.

Here are the key gameplay skills you will require: platforming reflexes, puzzle-solving skills, alcohol, fresh pants, a towel to cry in and a psychologist to work you through the years of lingering fear.
