Early Access Review
A21: This new update is so damn aesthetic. Zombie updates, building updates, streamlined HUD and talents - oh my. I am really enjoying sinking many hours into this new patch; there's a few bugs definitely, I lost my character's beginner questline off the bat when a server booted me, but I'm old in this game, so it didn't really bother me. I've found zombies clip in and out, but otherwise I'm very happy with where the game is headed. That being said, super sad to see all the water changes - no more glass bottle farming for this loot goblin[/b]

246 hours in, countless x.x.y alpha patches; it's not improving much. I'm a bit disappointed now. They need to kick it up a notch and start bringing the world into some semblance of polishing or definitive area they want to move into. Newest patches are forcing players into underground life. Which was fun for the first 100 hours, now with electricity and heat generation, it's more screamers, more zombies digging down -250ft.

Having fairly minor experience with free world survival games, playing Rust previously, I had a fun time... but it was missing something, you could get your bases all nice and zombie proof, and essentially player proof within a few days, it became a sniping fest after a little while.

Early access 7DTD however had me screw up fairly quickly, found some unboiled water, promptly drank it while dehydrated and began vomiting everywhere. Found some meat, and had some walkers on my butt within moments. Soon after, I noticed a giant Wasp, which cottoned on to my existence and stung me to death.

Now, after that whole death spam, I made it into a derelict metropolis, noticed a lovely building with plenty of easily exploited areas for drop pits, pungees, and all round safety for my scaredy-cat self. I went out after the first night had finished, hearing sounds of a plethora of walkers that wanted my tasty flesh and took axe to skull... got overwhelmed, and died. Nobody looted my corpse, so that's a bonus. I then began constructing my ultra-secure, 4 story building repairs. Not a soul made it into my place alive.

I began making high powered weapons, and had a very great secondary and tertiary base, all nice and cosy, away from dogs and wasps. The downside being: your bases only have 1 mattress over all bases, so, essentially your respawn may not actually be anywhere near your homebase (really, I'm just an idiot and didn't realise soon enough).

    PROS:
  • Super duper easy to kill yourself from things like - water, food, rancid food.
  • Get drunk.
  • So. Much. Space. I literally ran for DAYS attempting to reach end borders, or other signs of civilization. I found a few rebar drop fortresses but that was few and far between.
  • Zombies are smarter than the average bear - they can sniff you, they can hear you.
  • When night comes, an immense sense of oh shi~ begins. When you get weeks into survival, you can still get mobbed by ever increasing intelligence.
  • Respawning gun safes, cabinets, book shelves; which all allow recipes and blueprint discoveries - so fun collecting whole sets!
  • Playing with friends, especially new friends on vent, TS, Skype etc. is hilarious when they're trying to find you and hilariously get mobbed to death before you arrive.
    CONS:
  • While the Zombie design is cool, there's a lot of rehashed skins, there's little variety to actual Zombies - essentially bruisers, fast walkers, slow walkers, and occasionally a bloat type...
  • Dogs suck balls.
  • Wasps suck even more balls, especially without some kind of Crossbow/ Gun on hand.
  • Underestimating falls and leaps; easily gib yourself...
  • Sometimes dogs and wasps can warp into your shoeboxes (if you're out on the hunt and need a safe area to die if you're too encumbered).
  • Climbing Zombies, which I guess is technically a pro, because they also show you your base flaws.

Overall, I really enjoy this game, it's too bad I don't get to play it more, really. P.S. While there are a dime-a-dozen free world Alpha Zombie Survival games, this one does have a certain, I don't know what that really tickles my fancy.
