Don't know if it was even a registered user that did the hacking - probably was, but the attack wasn't via a forum account. They managed to upload an exploit - probably through a security hole in SMF, which then allowed them full access to the file system on the web server, and directly to the database.

This meant they could modify ANY data without being logged in, or having to be an admin. Looks like they did a bulk update of post counts, and signatures to start with. Haven't dug any deeper to see what else.

So I've taken the site offline for now. I have daily backups, and clean copies of everything in source control, so should be able to fix whatever the prob was, and get it back up again soonish.

Shit, do you think maybe that Al-Qabandi guy had something to do with the site getting hacked?
