Early Access Review
Fantastic Fun! I've been using VR since the DK days (currently using a Rift) and whilst complex flight sims are great in VR there's a niche for a game like this.

I'd love to see this refined and would be particularly excited to see multiplayer added!

I've been playing since before steam release and have to say I'm dissapointed by the lack of content. There's not tutorial or intro mission/quests and very little content. The game is very nice to look at but lacks and soul or feeling of immersion in the world, however the PvP griefing that currently seems to be the only gameplay spoils even the simple pleasures like exploration.

The splash screen states "We've been able to successfully develop WWO into the great game you're about to play" I'm still waiting to play a great game. This one is still clearly early access. Another dissapointed player who purchased before the Steam release and therefore can't get a refund.

As a long time flight sim geek I really miss flying Bill Lyon's wonderful Piper Apache model from the days of FS2002/2004 and this add on goes some way towards filling that gap in my virtual hangar. The Piper Aztec doesn't quite have the retro appeal or the looks of the Apache but it's a very nice GA twin which offers a great alternative to flying the default FSX Beech Baron.

The exterior 3D model is well rendered and nicely animated and the virtual cockpit looks great too. I love the option to be able to remove the yoke to access some of the more fiddly switches and buttons. It's also possible to switch between a modern radio stack (with panel mounted GPS) and an older setup more in common with the age of the aircraft. This can be done with click of the panel rather than reloading the aircraft which is a really nice touch! As is often the case with good quality add on aircraft there is a small performance 'price' to pay for a high quality model and consequently I find I'm getting slightly lower FPS than the default Baron though performance is perfectly acceptable on a mid to high range rig with my own preferred settings.

The flight model feels pretty good, although I've never flown an Aztec in real life it handles pretty much as I would expect and feels disctinctly different from the default aircraft. I spend most of my time flying VFR in flight sim but in the interests of writing a fair review I did fly a couple of ILS approaches which worked exactly as expected. Whilst the Aztec doesn't really offer anything new compared to the default FSX aircraft it's a nice looking model that is a lot of fun to fly. Recommended!

The A6 Intruder has long been a favourite aircraft and carrier ops are great fun in FSX. It's obvious a lot of work has gone into the 3D model with a nice looking exterior and a good, functional virtual cockpit. It's a shame that the same amount of effort hasn't been expended on the flight model. I've seen trains turn tighter than this A6! Back pressure on the stick in even a steep turn dramatically increases the rate of climb with very little effect on the rate of turn. In the stall the height loss is dramatic, which may be realistic but not with such a high forward speed and getting the speed down on the approach is really tough, the speed brakes are inefficent and I find it hard to believe an aeroplane like the A6 is so 'slippery'. Despite those misgivings I still believe this model offers reasonable value for money and is worth checking out if carrier aviation is your thing!

EDIT: The A6E is not configured for carrier launch by default, I had to modify the aircraft.cfg file as follows:

Configure the A6E Intruder for Carrier launch

I've noticed the Intruder (and therefore probably the Prowler too) is not configured for carrier launches by default. If you want to add this capability it's relatively straight forward to add this by editing the CFG file.

  1. Locate the file, remember the path is different from most other aircraft files (\SteamApps\common\FSX\DLC\379242\SimObjects\Airplanes\Virtavia A-6E Intruder)

  2. Open the file aircraft.cfg with notepad and add the following to the below the last line:

    [launch_assistance]
    launch_bar_pivot=15.43, 0.00, -6.00
    launch_bar_lug=17.00, 0.00, -7.92

    Note: these values seem to work well with the A6E, if you want more info and what the individual values mean check out the SDK reference here[msdn.microsoft.com]

  3. Save the file and start FSX:SE.

  4. Get the aircraft on the carrier and lined up on the catapult either by landing it (not easy in the A6!) or just start another flight on the carrier and swap out the aircraft. Line her up on the Catapult.

  5. Ensure you have keystrokes or joystick buttons configured for "Take Off Assist (Arm/Disarm)" (the default is Shift-I) & Take Off Assist (Fire) (the default is Shift-Spacebar)

Lunar Flight is a simple sim that allows you to fly an Apollo style lunar module around four different maps (difficulty varies between the maps) simulating the moon and mars environments. It has a steep learning curve but is extremely satisfying to master.

Initially it feels a bit like playing the classic 8 bit 'lunar lander' type games in 3D but there's more to it than that. Missions include carrying cargo between locations, gathering data from survey sites and recovering lost cargo. As you progress with missions you gain XP and are able to upgrade your ship to make it more fuel efficient and more manoeuvrable.

Multiplayer introduces combat, adding 'sidewinder' style missiles and decoy flares to the mix. Combat isn't easy; changing direction can be hard due to inertia and it's a pretty unique experience.
