I had no idea an online card game would be so addicting. I haven't really played M:tG before this game, so keep in mind that this recommendation is being written with no relation to the actual card game. You can customize decks to a degree, but you don't have complete freedom. It's not as limiting as you think, though. I'd compare the decks to something like a fighting game. Each character has their move list, they have their strengths and weaknesses, but it's up to you how to play them. Skill isn't left by the wayside.

I loved the original Ace of Spades. Ace of Spades: Battle Builder, however, is an affront to those fond memories of playing this game for hours on end several years ago. This Jagexified version ruins a game that was perfect. The addition of classes was a terrible idea designed to draw people expecting this to be a Minecraft COD. The addition of rockets, and the bizarre choice to make killed players blow up their surroundings, trivializes what makes AoS AoS: the ability to construct your own structures. Why build a bridge, bunker, tower, or trench when it can be effortlessly blown up by someone across the map?

Am I being blinded by nostalgia? Afraid of change? I don't think so. Judge for yourself by playing the GOOD version at www.buildandshoot.com.

This review is probably going to sound smarmy. For the record, I like COD, I like BF3, and I like CS; they're great fun. But this game is completely different. This game isn't like most shooters. You have to be thoughtful. You have to take it slow. You have to communicate.
This game is all about cover. Sometimes you're going to lay down a ton of bullets without hitting anyone, while still calling it a success. Suppression works in Insurgency where it fails in Battlefield. There's the same effect of one's screen turning blurry and white if you're under heavy fire, but the target won't move because they know that they'll die if they venture forth from behind their burnt-out car or crashed helicopter. Grenades are mainly useful not because they'll rack up a ton of kills, but because if forces the enemy to dash away from an entrenched position.
The sound is the best I've heard in a shooter. Gunfire sounds convincing both up close and far away. The graphics are better than they seem in the screenshots, which seem to have some weird post-processing effect. The lighting is better in-game.
By this time you've already bought the game, right? Two things. First, get a friend to buy it too, or make a friend with someone who already plays. It's best with a predetermined team, but even two people working as a unit can turn the tide in a match. Secondly, take breaks often. This game is incredibly tense, and you'll need to take some time between matches to play light jazz and unclench your buttocks.

Early Access Review
Don't let the rabbits fool you. This game has the best hand-to-hand combat system I have ever seen: quick, intuitive, brutal, exciting and unforgiving. I almost never buy early-access games, but even in its current state this is a beautiful game.

Unless you really love some of these characters, this game isn't good for more than a couple of hours of gameplay. Your opponent's banter, which is really the game's only draw, starts getting recycled fairly quickly. If it's only a few bucks it's a fun buy, but otherwise don't bother.

Taking the best part of any open-world game with vehicles, and adding in dozens of other people to ♥♥♥♥ around with. The best.

If you can get past the anime panty-shots, this is the best 2d-fighting game for the PC.
