Great idea, flawed execution

Let me just start by saying that I love the Darksiders franchise, so it pains me to write something critical of this game.

First the overall plot of hunting down the Seven Deadly Sins is a great idea, and I think a natural extension to the themes in the DS universe. This game just kind of dropped the ball in a few places, though.

The World
You play this game mostly on Earth, after the Apocalypse, but before the events of DS1. My main problem with this is the size of this world. In 2009, this was totally acceptable. But for 2018, I expected something much, much larger (Open World in fact). The map size is comparable to that of DS1 and it feels even smaller because because you don't get to ride your horse.. Maybe that's why they got rid of the minimap in this game, to not draw as much attention to the size.

Combat
Not bad. The new dodge system is a lot of fun (if you can do it right!) and the enemies are new ones mostly that weren't present in previous games. There are no executions though, which I miss. As far as weapons, you have your whip (very long reach by previous games' standards) and secondary weapons based on the hallow you are using (for closer combat). There is also the cross-blade that we saw in DS1.

Graphics
The graphics are not very impressive to be honest. They don't look all that much improved from DS2 in 2012. This is especially evident in the human character models. They kind of look like Fortnite characters. Some of the other characters from DS1 look much the same as they did 10 years ago. This game came out 6 years after DS2, but you couldn't tell from the graphics or world size.

Overall
Overall I enjoyed the story and playing through, enough to play it a little more in Apocalypse+ mode. There was a lot of potential that I think was left on the table, whether because people didn't have time or vision. Too bad. Maybe they will get it right if there ever is a standalone game with Strife.

Lots of fun, satisfying hacking and slashing, but a bit too short. Graphics, motion capture and voice acting are superb.

The creators of this game need to be taken to trial for war crimes. No more than 10 minutes into the game they -- without provocation I might add -- drop a megaton feels bomb. Their assault caused extensive damage to survivors' masculinity and many victims now have to cope with emotions the have never felt before. I am calling for a full investigation of this incident!

In this game I'm actually a responsible parent for giving my children weapons to play with. Show's what you know, Child Protective Services!

Note: Review for original DS2 plus my take on Deathinitive at the end.

Darksiders II will go down as one of my favorite games of all time.

I really enjoyed DS1 and was eager to see what DS2 had in store, although I was a bit nervous at first about playing as Death instead of War. I got over it.

First, DS2 compared to DS1:
  • Much larger world with more characters to interact with.
  • Tons of new weapons, armor and powers to mix and match to your play style. Feels almost like an MMO!
  • Use your horse from the get-go.
  • Where War is heavy and powerful, Death is nimble and lithe.
  • Minor notes: There's no double jump or underwater attacking.

Second, DS2 as its own game:
Pros:
  • Nice graphics, architecture and atmosphere.
  • Soundtrack is pretty cool.
  • Very fluid and intuitive gameplay. There are tons of combos or buy/learn and lots of weapons to try out. Whether your style is magic, heavy hitting or quick attacks, there are weapons and powers for everyone.
  • It's got a bit more parkour than the last one, which is fun. If you've played Prince of Persia (2008) it will seem really familiar.
  • Story is lengthy, but a little convoluted at times. The DLC/bonus campaigns are a nice touch.
  • Boss fights are good and I liked the puzzles.
  • Lots of sidequests.

Cons:
  • Some missions become a little too "fetchy." I need to talk to person A. Person A won't talk to me until I get items X, Y and Z. I get X until I collect α, β and γ. You get the idea.
  • Sometimes I forget why I'm doing what I'm doing.
  • Spoiler: You never interact with War, although it is your mission to save him.
  • Towards the end of the game, it got a little buggy: More on that later.
  • Gore/violence is not that much considering it's "M" rating. I was expecting more severed limbs and guts.

Deathinitive Edition:

I was in a weird position. I was actually about halfway done with the standard edition of the game when the Deathinitive came out, promising better game play and stuff. At first, word on the street was that you couldn't copy over your save file. So I said, it's probably better if I finish the original first. So here's what happened. I came across a crippling bug: I was unable to open a void walker portal towards the very end of the game. It was supposed to just open, but wasn't responding to me. I saw online that one other guy had this problem and in the end gave up on the game. I was afraid I'd have to do the same. I restarted the application, and it was stuck on the load screen. I was so pissed because I couldn't finish this amazing game, due to a stupid bug. Eventually after the Kubler-Ross 5 stages of grief, I accepted it and realized this was probably the time to start playing the Deathinitive Edition. And that's when things got crazy.

I downloaded Deathinitive and saw that it had a save slot already for the exact location that I was in in the Standard Edition when the bug hit. I loaded it and it worked! I was able to finish the game I started on the Standard Edition and am now current in New Game+ in the Deathinitive. Overall, the graphics so-called improved graphics in this edition are not all that impressive. In most cases I don't notice a visual difference. However, my PC goes into maximum overdrive like I'm playing Arkham Knight on the highest settings and becomes very loud. I don't think the graphics justify the extra heat.

So bottom line: This is a really great game and I hope everyone can enjoy the Darksiders franchise. I am really excited about the possibility of a DS3!

TL;DR: Middle Eastern Parkour Simulator

I played the game originally on the Xbox 360 when it first came out and enjoyed it. Since I didn't get to finish it there, I wanted to play it on the PC.

Pros:
  • Looks beautiful, especially after you have cleansed an area. There's lots of really nice Middle Eastern architecture to look at and a nice ambience overall. Best played with the lights off to get the full effect.
  • Occasionally funny dialogue between the protagonists.
  • Puzzles can be challenging at times, I wish there were more.

Cons:
  • No non-boss enemies. You don't really fight anything that isn't a boss like animals or other hostiles. You can't use your sword outside of battle to cut stuff or anything.
  • No depth to fighting style. Essentially, you can get away with continually hitting the attack button and dodging the enemy. There aren't any real combos other than magic/sword/magic. You don't learn any new moves or get any new weapons as you progress.
  • Light seed collection can get repetitive.
  • When you fall off, you go back to last piece of level ground you were standing on, which could have been really far back, forcing you to repeat the jumping sequence you just did.
  • Story could use a little tweaking.

Other:
  • You can't seem to die. Ever. Falling off ledges, almost getting skewered by the Hunter, getting sucked up into goo . . . everytime you will be saved by Elika. Even when she is trapped by one of the enemies! She can't free herself, but some how can reach across the arena and grab your arm.
  • I hope you like parkour because there's a lot of it. Sometimes it's fun and fluid, especially when you have a good rhythm going.
  • There's quick action sequences during boss fights reminiscent of Resident Evil 4.

Overall, this isn't the type of game I see myself playing for several days in a row, but more of a game I come back to whenever I need to take a break. I still recommend it though.

Note: I have never played any other PoP game before this one, so I can't compare it to previous installments in the franchise.

TL;DR: Bottom line, it wasn't as good as the first one and felt a little rushed.

So let me just start by saying that I am writing this review as a huge Star Wars fan and even as someone who loves this universe and it's lore, this game was not impressive.

Pros:
1. It has more graphics settings options than the first game, which basically only had one option: high detail or not.
2. You use two lightsabers instead of one. I was a marauder in SWTOR so this really appealed to me.
3. Improved lightsaber violence. I've played a few games as a Jedi/Sith but this is the first where you actually dismember and decapitate your enemies when you hit them with your lightsaber. Nice detail there.

Cons:
1. Short. I beat the game in only about 6 hours and I played the first game for almost three times as long. I have not yet nor do I really plan to try the challenges.
2. It was choppy. I certainly meet the recommended requirements but I still had issues with screen tearing and just low levels of detail. I don't think it looked as good as the screen shots.
3. The story wasn't all that interesting. He's a clone, wants to be with Juno and fights Vader. The end. I'm glad I never read the novelization for this. Based on the final cut scene there might have been a TFU3, but that'll never happen.
4. The attacks weren't as detailed as the first game. I didn't get to buy various attacks like the first game.
5. Dagobah was a huge ripoff. What was the point of it?
6. WAY too much action. Seriously the game was non-stop storm trooper slaughter; you never got a break from it. Always moving forward and killing. It was like a bad action movie. No puzzles or side quests or explorable worlds.

At the end of the day, I don't recommend you buy it and play it. If you got it as part of the Star Wars bundle like I did, feel free to give it a shot but don't expect a quality game.

You get to see Boba Fett, but never fight him :(

I took a merchant's property from right in front of him and sold it back to him for gold. Best American Foreign Policy simulator I've ever played.

I can't shake the feeling that this game started off as Batman: Arkham Something and then they changed all the thugs to Uruks. If you've played Arkham City/Knight, you'll see what I mean.

Anyways, Orc slaughtering simulator.

This game was so scary I stop playing after the third chapter. I reinstalled the game and tried again and uninstalled it again due to overwhelming fear. I'm a grown man and this game is so terrifying I literally can't play it.
