Has autosaving disabled by default. Lost two hours of progress to a crash.
Cannot recommend in its current state but I'm sure to give it a another go in half a year or so.

Fun little game not taking itself too seriously. Active modding community. Two things missing I wish it had are online leaderboards and Workshop support.

A remarkable adventure while it lasted. Loved the story and the unique characters. Has a good soundtrack too. "Procedurally generated" is selling it too much tho as on my second playthrough it basically was exactly the same scenes, just in different order.

It's basically like FTL but without a option to pause. The game starts pretty easy but gets increasingly difficult as the enemies get more health and firepower. I have almost 20 hrs on record and I'm yet to finish the main campaign.

The game has received couple of much needed post-launch updates. They added a new game mode in addition to the main campaign and also, most importantly, made the game a bit easier. There's also couple of DLCs now, but I haven't looked into those yet. In the latest update they also added controller support, which is nice.

All in all, pretty 8/10 game overall. If you love(d) FTL, you'll also probably like this. You might find it little hectic in the beginning if you're anything like me and constantly used the pause in FTL.

I was bored after first five minutes. No wonder it was on sale for 39 cents...

Here I am, not even playing the game, only sitting on the main menu, listening the theme music. Oh, all of my childhood memories are right here...

Then the game crashes.

Oh well, maybe it´s just this one time... I hope... I relaunch the game and start playing...

I´m getting about 15 FPS. WTF!?!

So, I´m playing a decade old game on the computer that can run AoE III at solid 60 and I´m getting 15 FPS. Okay, I go to Steam forums and search performance problems. I get dozens of threads all saying the same thing: The old and un-optimized code is causing problems for many. But... But I thought that HD Edition meant that this kind of problems were fixed. Apparently not.

Finally, I went to the settings screen and turned vsync, AA and "3D water" off. That helped a bit and now I´m getting about 30-35 FPS. It´s playable, but just barely..

While there, I also turned "Two-Button mouse support" on. Man, this game really is old...

I have yet to test the online multiplayer, but according to the forums, it works fine or okay at least.

Early Access Review
I was going to write a proper review, but I´m too busy playing this game...

It´s still in Early Access and it´s missing some late-game content, but it´s perfectly stable and playable. It even has a multiplayer.

If you are only looking for multiplayer experience, I´d wait some time. The multiplayer works, but is a little hard to get going and it desyncs easily. I´m sure they fix it eventually.

10/10

First things first:

This is not like The Stanley Parable!

This game was made by the same developer as The Stanley Parable, but don´t expect to get another funny or absurd experience like that.

Instead, The Beginner´s Guide is a emotional trip through various video game consepts. The actual experience isn´t the game itself but the backstory and the relationship between the narrator (developer himself) and a close friend of his who made these video game consepts. (True story? No idea.)

There´s not much to say about the game. You need to play it yourself. Just like The Stanley Parable, The Beginner´s Guide doesn´t follow the normal rules of video games.

Because of that, this game is not meant for hardcore gamers or for action seekers. There are not objectives to do. For a length of an hour or two, think it as a pricy art exhibition.

If you´re interested in video games as art, this may just be for you. Otherwise, skip it!

+ Nice driving model and physics
+ Unique idea and game mechanics
+ The amount of destruction caused when driving around
+ Lots of extra stuff (missions, challenges etc.) to do
+ Can be run on lower-end PCs
+ Glitch free gameplay
+ Large explorable area...

* ... which is a little dull-looking tho.
* Okay main storyline and good side quests

- Even Steam-version uses Uplay :(
- Sometimes repeating missions
- Main storyline is pretty short

Fun game if you are into politics. Full modding and Steam Workshop support with active community. Buy with DLCs for more depth and challenge.
