If you're looking for intense challenging gameplay I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere -- Call of Cthulhu has very simplistic gameplay, mostly a first-person walking and talking simulator with some atmospheric but very easy puzzles and first-person stealth sections. The game doesn't drag though, it's quite short and the segments generally only last as long as they need to.

Nevertheless, Call of Cthulhu definitely redeems itself in atmosphere and story. It's patterned more after adventure modules for the tabletop RPG than Lovecraft's actual stories, but it does suitable justice to both, relying far less on jumpscares and the sensation of being hunted and far more on just a general sense of impending and inevitable doom.

Since the gameplay is merely unimpressive rather than detrimental, the story is able to save the game. I think this is a welcome addition to the library of anyone who is a fan of Lovecraft's stories or wants a taste of cosmic horror, but if you want something tense or gory stay away.

It's certainly the best Star Wars game in a decade, for what that's worth. A perfectly competent mix of gameplay concepts from other successful games.

The ending is enraging and the game as almost zero replay value, and as Souls-like games go it's definitely on the easy side with Master difficulty being about what the devs want you to play it on. If you explore to 100% your first playthrough you can probably squeeze maybe 40 hours out of it, but little more than that. A solid 7/10, hope the sequel improves on it.

You will not like Dark Souls the first time you play it, most likely. It's difficult, it's hard to figure out quite how to play it right, it's hard to figure out where to go.

To this I say not "git gud" but more specifically "read your item descriptions and learn to parry".

Do those two things and the game unfolds before you like a blooming rose. You will see how truly wondrous it is.

An excellent follow-up to the original, though with a few complaints here and there. The changes to the mini-games during the trials are mostly not improvements -- they're either strictly lateral moves or downgrades. The executions are generally too out there to be engaging and properly visceral. The middle cases feel cheap -- one of them comes down to catching the real killer mis-speaking during the trial, and in the other you identify the killer through raw process of elimination rather than motive or anything more interesting than "literally everyone else has an alibi". Some of the characters are lame mix-and-match remakes of characters from the first game, which makes the game feel a little lazy.

It more than makes up for it, though -- the characters who AREN'T just mix-and-match copies are amazing, and expansions to the story's universe are well-thought-out. The weak cases are overall balanced out by the strong ones, and the fifth one in particular is magnificent. An excellent sequel to an excellent game.

Planescape: Torment is and always has been one of the greatest games ever made, so the question here is whether the enhanced edition is any good.

I can tell you it certainly isn't BAD. The improvements to the interface look good and keep the general aesthetic intact. Most of the changes are the kind of thing that could easily be done with mods on the original game, but they've got a bit more style to them this way, while the mods could be a little clumsier.

There's not a ton of improvement over the original, but it's entirely debatable whether that would actually be possible, so that's fine. Overall, I highly recommend it -- it made only the most crucially vital changes, and knew when to leave well enough alone.

I think I need to wash my keyboard after playing this game.

If you are a D&D 3.5 fan, imagine every criticism you ever lobbed at 4E about it being "too much like a video game".

Now imagine a video game based on 4E that removed all the redeeming factors. You have no party. Your at-wills are on the hotbar, as are your encounter powers and daily powers, which are now keyed exclusively to real-time cooldowns themselves.

And it's all buggy as hell.

They could have made a wonderful, even FUNCTIONAL version of the D&D Tactics PSP game using the 4E ruleset. They decided to do precisely the opposite, creating a buggy hack-and-slash PC game based loosely on the 4E ruleset.

WOTC was on to something when they made the GBA Eye of the Beholder and the PSP D&D Tactics. They missed the target, but they got somewhere close. A proper D&D TRPG is just waiting to be made, but now it's looking it will never come to pass. A pity.

I want to like this game. I really do. It's a shame, but I JUST BARELY can't recommend it.

This game moves slow, and the romantic subplot is a big part of the slowness, which is unfortunate since the romance really doesn't quite justify its presence. It's not that it's bad so much as it fails to integrate properly, feeling more like a distraction from the plot than a part of the plot. While the game still manages to create a few real moments of horror, it's all spaced out between so much banality.

Whoever tagged this "Lovecraftian" fails to understand Lovecraft. It very superficially resembles Derleth's story of Ithaqua, but has none of Lovecraft's cosmicism. At no point do any of the humans in this tale feel insignificant -- if anything this game is bogged down by its obsession with the mundane frivolities of mankind.

Horror and slow burns go together like chocolate and peanut butter, but you have to make the horror worth the burn, and the threat is ultimately just a little too pedestrian for that. The environmentalist themes are painfully heavy-handed, and what should be a work of art ends up feeling a little more like propaganda.

From a technical standpoint, while most of the puzzles are JUST hard enough to make for a decent adventure game, the game throws in a number of parser puzzles where you are asked to TYPE an answer to a prompt. The prompt is usually hideously vague, and in many cases if you don't have a walkthrough you're screwed. So even from a gameplay perspective, this game just insists on sabotaging itself out of "recommended" territory. Also, while the game engine is gorgeous, the cutscenes look like something from the late 90s, so it's even sabotaging its own success from a graphical standpoint.

Do you want a game about a ghost trying to solve his own murder while escorting a young woman past various dangers by manipulating objects like some kind of heroic poltergeist? Then play Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.

Do you want a detective adventure game? Then play Ace Attorney Investigations. Or L.A. Noire.

Do you want both of the above but lack a Nintendo DS? Then get this game.

Murdered: Soul Suspect has all the investigation/logic gameplay of Ace Attorney Investigations with the difficulty dialed back to "negligible", all the poltergeist gameplay of Ghost Trick with the difficulty dialed back to "non-existent", and clumsily shoehorns in some MGS-ish stealth gameplay with the difficulty dialed back to "fish in a barrel".

Fortunately, what it lacks in challenge, it more than makes up for in the strength of its story. For a game that's only 7-12 hours long, the characters resonate very strongly right off the bat, and the mystery is doled out in exactly the right portions at exactly the right time. It might also make you want to take a vacation in Salem, MA, because it makes it look like a fantastically cool and eerie town.

TL;DR: This game is a wonderful visual novel wrapped in a weak stealth adventure game. It would have worked better on a handheld console with the stealth crap cut out, although being a console/PC game did give it gorgeous graphics. If it's on sale, definitely get it. Full price, give it some thought.
