Legião Portuguesa DoD:S - Public
The Portuguese Legion was an armed militia founded in 1936 and was not disbanded until April 25, 1974 when the revolution and liberalization of Portugal arrived. The Legion was a fascist organization that most sources state had 20,000 members. The goal of the Legion was to defend the "New State" created by Dr. Salazar for Portugal. Its members served as informers for the government and adopted secret police tactics to intimidate, imprison and terrorize the opponents of the regime.
