Mage's Initiation: Reign of the Elements

Overview

Mage's Initiation is a 2D Point & Click Adventure Game / RPG hybrid, set in the fantasy medieval land of Iginor. In the tradition of Sierra's classic "Quest for Glory" series, you may choose to play as one of four character classes (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water Mage), each with unique spells, abilities, quests, and puzzle solutions!

The Story

D'arc is sixteen-years-old. From the age of six, he has studied the magic of the Elements, under the discerning eyes of Iginor's Masters. After a decade confined to the Mages' Tower, and a life of academics and magical mastery, the inquisitive initiate often dreams of exploring the world beyond.

He is about to get that chance.

D'arc is summoned to the Tower's Hallowed Hall, where the Masters set him a trio of challenges: return with the lock of an enchantress's hair, a griffon's egg, and the horn of a rare creature known as a trinicorn.

Join D'arc as he journeys through the medieval-styled realm of Iginor. Brave a redcap goblin infested forest. Navigate a vast lake to encounter an evil so pure, not even beauty can disguise it. Ascend to the peaks of Flyteria, a valley of winged warriors once dedicated to protection of the human town.

Three quests. One chance.

Succeed and he shall take his place among his fellow Mages.

Fail and nobody shall remember his name.

I was interested in playing this game after seeing Mike Nnemonic's LP. It's definitely a game worth checking out. The tone of this game is very tongue-in-cheek with funny achievements. The spellcasting is neat in that you can make up your own combinations in addition to using the ones you learn along the way. It would be better if the controls weren't so delayed though! A warning: it runs slooow even on relatively new computers; I am using a 1-year-old HP S5710F running Windows 7 with a 3.20 ghz processor and 3GB RAM but the game ran like a snail who took a Valium and washed it down with molasses while waiting for that bridge from Long Island to Connecticut to be built. Run the game in the lowest resolution possible and in windowed mode and turn off the shadow effect, everything will run a lot faster. It's a game I wanted to get an epic fullscreen experience of so I'm disappointed in that respect. Technical issues aside, it's a fun little diversion I'd recommend.

It's definitely a strange (in a good way) game and for all you TL;DR types...no text! I really like the art style, it reminds me of some of the trippy children's books I had in the early 90's.
