Would I recommend Cathedral? I would, but it's definitely not for everyone. This game is a prime example of how an excellent Metroidvania has to be like in terms of level design and exploration, but it's also a very tough game when it comes to boss fights and the final area, which a lot of people will probably find off-putting. You really have to remember boss patterns like in Mega Man games, plus master your caracter's skills to succeed at those fights, which were the most tedious part for me, as I'm usually pretty bad at these kind of games. But then, I managed to beat this awesome game eventually, so it wasn't too bad after all. It took me roughly 34 hours and 359 deaths to get to this point though, with 100% of the map explored and all items collected. I don't regret that I kept going even though I was at the verge of smashing my controller against the wall when fighting some of the bosses.

Looking at Cathedral's global Steam Achievement stats, it shows that only one person out of ten to start this game actually finishes it. Hence, before deciding to play this game, you will need to ask yourself, "do I have the patience to go through all this pleasure and pain?". If your answer is yes, you're in for a challenging but fair adventure with gorgeous pixel art.

Pretty interesting puzzle game where you can go back and forth in time to change your character's actions to solve the puzzles. The puzzles are straight forward and not too hard, especially at the beginning. The price on Steam is a little too high considering it only has 10 missions, it should have 15 to 20 missions in my opinion, preferably in the vein of the last two missions which were a good challenge. An obvious issue this game has is it is locked at 30 FPS, but this didn't distract me from giving it a chance and enjoy the game. I completed it entirely though the last achievement for collecting all pocket watches did not trigger for me even though I picked them all up. Despite the issues, I still had a pretty good time with this game and there's no reason to not recommend it. There's hoping the devs or someone else is picking up this game's gameplay formula to create a similar game.

EDIT: just replayed nearly all levels and the last achievement triggered eventually.

Bought this game on release day. It plays and looks like it's right up my ally. Unfortunately the Steam version is bugged, when completing the 8th stage, it doesn't let me continue to the next world. Hopefully this will be patched one day.

You get to kill Goebbels, Himmler and Göring in this forgettable WW2 shooter. Play on the highest difficulty, otherwise this will be no challenge at all. If you know what to expect from a City Interactive shooter, you will not be disappointed, if you don't and you're looking for a descent WW2 FPS, you better look elsewhere. Anways, I'm looking forward to whatever classic low budget games City Interactive might release on Steam in the future.

Are you looking for a bugged, unoptimzed triple C shooter with dumb A.I. and dated graphics? Look no further, The Royal Marines Commando will make your dreams come true! You're basically running from point A to B, shooting Nazis on your way and planting explosives on some targets for around 2 hours, while being accompanied by one or two companions that are either clearing the way for you or standing in your way. Nothing too fancy but not too shabby either if you don't take it seriously. Not worth the 5 bucks they ask for on Steam, but at 80% off you get your bang for the buck. I sincerely hope City Interactive digs out more of their classic triple C shooters, my wallet is ready to buy them all.

Roving in the Dark is a neat and short exploration platformer, made by one person with Clickteam Fusion. You are some spelunker exploring caves, collecting treasures and rescuing people. Along the way you get some upgrades, which you will need to progress further. The controlls are tight, for me they were hard to get used to initially, but after playing the tutorial life got much easier. The spelunker can actually run, which I was not aware of at first, and this is the key for tricky jumps. Speaking of jumps, one odd mechanic you don't expect in a platformer is when you fall or jump from a higher platform to a lower platform you lose life or die ultimately. And dead comes very, very often. Luckily there are a bunch of checkpoints, but sometimes the way from one checkpoint to another can be tedious. If you know where to go and have great platformer skills, the game can be completed pretty quickly, so speedrunners will definitely enjoy this game. At the time playing this I found some glitches but I'm sure the dev will fix the issues. I clearly like Roving in the Dark.

Remember the time when you had to beat a game in one go? If you're looking for this kind of experience, Xenia might be a good choice. The game is not really a Metroidvania in my book, but borrows a few mechanics of the genre. You beat one stage after another until you reach the final boss. Inbeween the stages you can upgrade your life bar or your skills in the shop. You can revisit formerly passed stages and grind for gold. All stages are fairly linear, having many breakable walls where traps and treasures await you. Bosses can be skipped if you take a "dangerous" route, but honestly, the boss fights are fairly easy once you get the orb (which you should get first from the shop). Playing the Normal mode, gives you checkpoints and lets you continue anytime after you quit the game, but this mode is way to easy. The true appeal this game has are the hard and the hardcore modes, where you have to beat the game in one sitting, without any checkpoints. The difficulty is pretty much the same as Normal, but Hardcore is over once you die, and Hard will let you restart the stage. Each run should take about an hour or less, depending on how skilled you are or how fast you go. I kind of like this game for the hard modes. Unfortunately these achievements never triggered for me, nevertheless I can recommend this one to everyone looking for a late 80's/early 90's like platformer.

Not a groudbreaking game, but still a solid and rather short Metroidvania experience at a low price that you should pick up if you love this genre.

Chasm is a solid entry in the Metroidvania genre. I impulively bought the game on day one after getting notified about its release in a Steam e-mail, since it was on my wish list for four years or so, but I have not been anticipating it like the kickstarter backers. I usually don't buy games on day one (my last day one game purchase goes back to 2000, when Baldur's Gate 2 was released), but I don't regret having done so. The awesome pixel art and the controlls make playing it fell like it is on Super Nintendo, and that's what I expected it to be. Some people complain about the controlls, or going through similar looking (randomly generated) rooms, or about the backtracking, but those guys probably never played a platformer before, or a rouge like, or even a Metroidvania. My only gripes with this game are the difficulty and the crafting aspects; on normal difficulty it was clearly too easy, and I went through the game with minimal crafting / upgrading spells which is either good or bad, depending whether you like crafting or not. Guess people who look for a challenge should play it on hard right away, maybe crafting is more important on the highest difficulty. Other than that I clearly enjoyed the game and can recommend it to anyone looking for a nice Metroidvania experience with lovely pixel graphics.

This game is alright for its price and worth it if you have 2 hours to spare.
