Besides the immense difficulty and inherent chance that is associated with this game, the tactical missions are ridiculous and seem to have no rhyme or reason to them. Enemies won't see you one moment and then the next they are literally wiping out your entire force in one turn. One mistake and you are done. I understand that this is representative of reality, in a way, but really... for its clunky UI, lack of information, and constant debuffs at the start of every turn, I wish it could be a bit more forgiving. Mistakes in tactical missions literally end your game. There is no way to recover from them.

It's a good game for those people who enjoy grand strategy but don't want to spend hours scouring guides to decipher the confusing and expansive menus and interfaces that often accompany such grand strategy games. Realpolitiks is fairly straight-forward in that regard, and although it may be less complicated than other grand strategy games, what it does it does well. In addition, the developers have updated the game multiple times to fix some balancing issues, even though the game on release was already much more polished than many of the games that are released on Steam. Overall, I'd recommend.

Early Access Review
I purchased this game not because I believed I was going to love it, but because I hope Stardock invests in some new features for this game down the road. Good political simulators are rare to find, and Stardock's Political Machine series does a good job of creating a casual political simulator game that balances complexity, statistics-driven turn-based strategy, and fun.

As it is currently, I cannot give the game a positive review. For those who have not played any of The Political Machine games (specifically 2008 and 2012, as I have), this is a good game for you and you should check it out. For those of us who have played the previous Political Machine games, there is really nothing new here besides updated candidates and updated issues.

The gameplay and the gameplay mechanics are solid, and they have been since the inception of this series. For the price of a movie ticket, I know I personally will get at least several hours of enjoyment out of this over the next several months... But there are so many more features that could be added to this game, and I'm hoping that Stardock will invest in those features in the future, so that I can make my review a positive one.

This is one of the best casual games that I have played on Steam. It reminds me slightly of The Movies, by Lionhead Studios, which came out in the mid-2000's. It is a much simpler game than The Movies, but it still is fun in its own right. In addition, the developer of this game has released frequent updates over the course of the last year, improving the base game in multiple ways. It's not a game from a high-budget studio, and it's not perfect, but it is certainly worth the price and it will provide hours of fun for those who enjoy strategy-based games based on movies.
