A gentle story-telling approach that is reminscient of Sands of Time, a whole album of music that overshadows GLaDOS's two singles, a fantastic art style and solid gameplay- this game has it all in spades, plus a small developer who obviously cares for their product and is juggling and fixing bugs as we speak.
Especially fond of the weapon upgrade system and the character customization- done by filling slots with alcoholic beverages and spirits that have specific effects, much like the fallout perk system. Add to this vigils (in-game achievements with rewards) and a shrine (praying to various gods will give you bonus money and xp, but make enemies tougher, or explode when they die, etc.... basically, you get to set your own difficulty and reap the rewards).
But you get none of that to start. Each one you have to build in the Bastion, and they all have upgrades too, so there's a hell of a lot of choice and progression. A worthwhile newgame+ mode is just topping on the cake.
Quite possibly one of the best tower defence games ever. Splendidly leveraging the same 'AI and you' character setup used to great success in Portal to paint a fantastic backstory, combined with solid, well balanced gameplay, it remains to this day one of my favourite games ever.
So grab a basket of raspberries and give it a go.
