If Diablo III is just not working out for you (or working at all), there's never been a better time to give Torchlight a go. The sequel is on its way and is shaping up to be excellent, but Torchlight itself is a great game - especially for a tech demo that was built in less than a year. It's compelling, charming, and hugely moddable.

I nearly missed this one entirely, having not heard much about it on the review sites I follow. Spotted it in a sale a little while back and, being cheap, grabbed it to leave in my library of uninstalled games for an eternity. When I saw some details of the upcoming sequel and compulsively preordered the collector's ed. I figured it was time to give the original a spin. And, well...
It's awesome.
The PC adaptation is great for the genre, though initially you'll feel like it was made for someone with an extra hand. Mapping Capslock to a spare mouse thumb button makes a big difference.
Gameplay is wonderfully paced, giving you new items and abilities and enough time to let them feel natural before throwing a new game-changer at you. Enemies that you approach with cringing trepidation in the first few levels become manageable after a while, and it's encouraging to casually swat away a type of demon that was effectively a mini-boss earlier in the game. I'm out of space.

This game is a wonderful space sandbox, and arguably the greatest in its series. An epic backstory provides a universe which is richly entertaining to explore, and the multiple starting scenarios allow for a range of different ways to seek your fortune. The game's pace is closer to a Western RPG than a Shmup; the combat is exciting and over quickly, whilst the trek to the next sector can require some patience until one can afford a faster ship.
Did I mention that it looks fantastic, too?
