Spear of Destiny is a map pack for Wolf3D, it gives you some interesting new layouts and a couple of nicer looking textures. It is however, nothing much beyond what Wolf3D already offers so it should really only be of intrest if you finished all the Wolf3D levels and still feel like you need some varity.
I didn't play this back when I played Wolf3D so I guess I don't have the same connection with these new maps as I do the original ones.
Wolf3D is the game most often hailed as starting the First Person Shooter genre and although it was other games that truely created the genre and defined it was still Wolf3D that planted the seeds.
The game itself is not particuliary impressive, especially when taking in the context of the games that followed and did so much more in terms of gameplay and graphics. It is however a game that many people, myself included, will look back on as a fond memory from the past. That alone is for me worth enough to occasionally boot it up just to fight Mecha Hitler once more.
This game makes some of the biggest rookie mistakes you can make in an RTS game. The campaign simply does not introduce you to the game as much as it throws you in without a net. You have to guess your way through what counters what, what does what and such and it leaves the campaign with an incredibly rushed and frustrating feel. Maybe this is because it's a standalone expansion and the creators expected you to have played the original but that's still not a good enough excuse.
This game simply does not hold up to the Red Alert standard and as such, is not a worthy buy. Even the cutscenes are not up to C&C standards. The only redeeming factor is this entire mess is the Soviet female officer wering what appears to be a lowcut leather uniform.
