Beyond Pluto: A new 9th planet?

¶ According to two planetary scientists, a new ninth planet may be lurking through the debris of large pieces of ice in the Kuiper Belt. On January 20th, 2016, a few planetary scientists Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown received evidence on a new ninth planet may be lying around in the Kuiper Belt which is “an area of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune” (Crockett, 2016). Beyond planet Neptune is the Kuiper Belt, which contains frozen bodies of icy rock. In the Kuiper Belt, Batygin and Brown found evidence that a hidden planet may be concealed within the belt. Brown tried to look for unrecognized planets within the solar system and in other galaxies because Brown’s daughter “suggested a few years ago that she'd forgive me if I found a new planet, he told the Washington Post” (Crockett, 2016). After the conversation with Brown’s daughter, Mr. Brown started to look into the solar system and other galaxies for unrecognized planets that have never been found. Luckily, Batygin and Brown have evidence that an icy planet may be concealed within the Kuiper Belt.

¶ In further notice, if the new ninth planet turns out to be true, the planet may be added to the solar system. Crokket exclaims, “An unseen planet may be hiding in the outskirts of our solar system” (Crokket, 2016). A new ninth planet may be concealed in a clustered region in the solar system. If the new planet turns out to be true, the planet may be added to the solar system planets chart. Crokket replies, “Planetary scientists have just projected its existence based on oddities in the orbits of some far-flung icy bodies. Those tiny objects reside in the distant Kuiper (KY-pur) belt- a vast expanse of space beyond the orbit of Neptune” (Crokket, 2016). In the Kuiper Belt, which contains distant bodies of ice, evidence of a planet clumped in the Belt has been found by Brown and Batygin. Some bodies of ice are farther than the Kuiper Belt which leads to the conclusion that the farthest bodies of ice are attracted to a planet’s gravitational pull clustered within the Kuiper Belt.

¶ An approximate calculation of the distance between the new ninth planet and Earth would be troubling to calculate in miles. However, “Astronomers refer to the Earth’s average distance from the Sun as one “astronomical unit,” or AU” (Crokket, 2016). For example, a planet three AU would be three times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Using AU, astronomers are able to calculate the distance from distant planets, galaxies, stars, and many other space objects easily. Crokket explains, “The scientists are not sure how far away this new ninth planet would be. But their calculations indicate it should be somewhere between 400 to 1,500 AU” (Crokket, 2016). Though the scientists have already estimated an approximate calculation from the Earth to the new ninth planet, the calculation is not exact. To process the research on the planet, scientists must find the approximate distance from the Earth to the planet.

¶Along with the approximate distance from the Earth to the new ninth planet, scientists need to calculate the size of the planet. Batygin and Brown inform that the “new calculations suggest this new mystery world would be roughly ten times as massive as Earth” (Crokket, 2016). So the new ninth planet would technically be a super-planet and if the planet is made up of rock material, then the planet would indeed be a super-earth. Because the planet cannot be seen in the clustered Kuiper Belt, scientists might have to find another way to find what material what material the new ninth planet is made of. Crokket alleges, “And if it exists, it must travel a highly elongated orbit” (Crokket, 2016). So, the new ninth planet voyages a exceedingly lengthy course somewhere clustered within the Kuiper Belt. Except scientists are not sure whether or not the planet is really real.

¶As a final point, a new ninth planet ten times the size of the Earth and approximately “four hundred to one thousand and five hundred astronomical units” (Crokket, 2016) lurks within bulky bodies of ice in the infamous Kuiper Belt. Scientists are not firm whether or not the planet exists, but planetary scientists Konstantin Batygin and Michael Brown contain evidence that can verify the possibility of a new ninth planet.
