I'm a fan of Star Wars and played this mostly for the single-player campaign. It was a fairly nice little jaunt with some memorable moments and a few standout characters. Visually, this game more than impressed me, though I recognize I'm not usually on the bleeding edge of tech when gaming. The environments and set-pieces, heavily inspired by the sequel trilogy, were carefully and artfully recreated. Character models were mostly good if not jaw-dropping, though I found myself often let down by portrayals of beloved original trilogy characters. Hair often didn't seem to rise to the same standard as the rest of faces which led to some uncanny valley moments. Anyway, if you went into this game wanting to experience a Star Wars story, this is visually beautiful and narratively interesting.

Now, how about gameplay? Not multiplayer yet, no, just gameplay. Well, playing on PC, I found there to be only one control method that suited me and it wasn't perfect: the Steam Controller. I found that the combination of the trackpad and the gyro-aiming made a world of difference on the third/first-person sections. In fact, for some reason, I found the controls for standard controllers and mouse and keyboard both to be sub-par. Only with the pseudo-combination of the two, did I find the controls comfortable. Granted, I only messed around with the in-game options a little, I still found that the game did not feel well-optimized for any standard control method and I had to resort to out-of-game settings to really feel at ease. Still, this was not a perfect solution as the lack of a second analog stick on the Steam Controller made flight sections less enjoyable. I would either switch controllers or my controller settings between flight and land sections. Since this happens a lot in the campaign, I found this rather tedious. I would imagine this would play perfectly with the combination of controls the Steam Deck offers.

Now, I only tried two matches online and the first time was rather fun though I could feel my lack of experience and skill showing when compared to the other players. The second match I tried to get in required far more players than appeared to be online at the time indicating to me that the online mode for this game is waning. Again, this was just my experience with two matches. The thing is, I really didn't get this game for the online mode. Not to mention the idea of grinding for unlockables doesn't appeal to me very much for this game.

Overall, I think this lacks in key areas of gameplay to make it a fun game to play. Its spectacle and story carry it for me, but I can't help but feel EA could have done so much more to ensure the experience could stand on its own as a game.
