I've been playin games for 25 years. I've been playing multiplayer online games since 1996 (subspace shoutout).
Get off my lawn.
I play TF2 with my son.
My son is hardcore. My wife got up one night to pee and found my son missing from his bed. She found him in the basement playing Team Fortress 2 at 2:30am in the morning. He started steam, loaded a server, and was playing happily on my computer. Needless to say, he was grounded for a week from playing any games.
Pretty hardcore for a 5 year old.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the best multiplayer FPS ever. Too bad the gaming community is too dumb to realize it. Splash Damage ruined the series. Teamwork, shooting skill, STEALTH, trickjumps, movement speed, stratagy, and classes make it deeper then every FPS out there. It makes every FPS feel like duplo blocks.
The main problem with the game is it is very not newbie friendly. It is so skill based, experinced players will be nearly invincible to new players. Some players are so skilled they will be nearly invincible to newbies and experinced alike. So new people get discourage easily.
The follow up, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was made by Splash Damage. The creators of a RTCW map called MarketGarden.
Marketgarden was popular with newbies because it was basically nothing but a deathmatch. The map was extremely unbalanced, and it took a lot of the skill out of the game. What basically ended up happening is newbies with deathmatch in the middle, while the other players had a 5 on 5 objective game trying to get past the deathmatching newbies to accomplish the objectives.
So of course, id ignores the hardcore section of the game and turns over the franchise to Splash Damage.
Splash Damage releases a map pack for RTCW. The maps are so shity and unbalanced the hardcore immeditately ban them from competitve play. But once again, the newbies like them because they are once again, a giant deathmatch.
Splash Damage does not have a clue about class balance and map balance.
So of course id turns to them for the followup.
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory's single player was so shitty, they didn't release it. The multiplayer takes the original balanced formula, fucks with it to make it more newbie friendly, Add in some really shitty maps and release it for free.
I so pissed thinking about this story I have to stop writing and continue it some other time.
