My opinion: Empires is prbbly the best mod ever went out for HL2, would've been nicer to see it on CRYengine though...

I'm gonna give it a go, see you at the wrong side of my disruptor. ;)
It's far from perfect but it's the best you'll find.
If you've been playing the Total war series and have wished you could go down to the troop level to get things done up close and personal like I had, M&B:warband is definitely for you.
Don't bother with the old M&B(which have no multiplayer), Warband enjoys a better graphical quality and infrastructure so having the old title would be quite redundant.
You will want to help yourselves towards the main site and forums to get some of the mods - there's something for everyone; I personally recommended the "sword of damocles" mod.
Battles can range from 1 vs 1 to +9000 vs +9000. ;)
The true limmit would be your hardware.
The best and most honest way of describing this game would be to say that it's a most humble gaming title of epic proportions.
When I say epic, I mean epic - if you want to win a conquest victory you'll have to do it one corpse at a time.
This one get's an enthusiastic 100/100 due to it's vibrant modding community! :)
The game itself is nice enough.
It's "lolz" oriented so the toonish matches wont have a serious HC feel like in MW series or BF, thats not necessarily a bad thing.
One warning though, if you are not based in america or europe dont even bother with this game, for now you wont be able to find servers with a decent latency.
as a matter of fact, some of my EU friends are having troubles to find playable servers way too often.
Give it a few months. :)
