My apologies to those who knew me as Horde Destroyer. A change in username was needed as the former name was just getting too confusing for Left 4 Dead.
Support your team, as a coordinated team is more dangerous than a loose collection of individuals.
Leave the hurling of insults and other slurs to the delusional adolescents. Be courteous to the opposing team, even if losing, and even if they do not respond in kind. And do not give the opposition the satisfaction of ragequiting.
Failure is not without benefit unless you do not learn anything from it. We all fail on occasion, and the analytical mind that can ascertain what went wrong and can adjust accordingly will ultimately prevail over those who slavishly depend upon the same techniques in the end.
Do not be afraid to emulate the sound tactics of others. There is no shame as long as you learn from the best, regardless of their being friend or foe.
Understand the disparity between tactics that are game specific, and general skill and strategy. There is a difference. Knowledge of maps, likely locations of useful items, positions of strength, the nature and attacks of enemies, and spawn points are very helpful indeed, and give a player a definite advantage, but this does not translate into excellence in other games. General skills and strategies such as accurate aiming, dodging, judicious use of cover, ect... are skills that will remain with you regardless of what FPS you choose to play. Do not be in awe of imposters that have only the former, who masquerade as competant and skilled gamers.
Avoid the cheap tricks and underhanded tactics, such as the various hacks that exist. These are the tools of gamers who possess poor to mediocre skills. They depend upon them to succeed, and without them they fall apart. I have no respect for that, and it is a clear testament to a simple mind at work because they cannot prevail any other way.
Analyze and weigh out every strategy, discard that which does not prove to be advantageous, work in harmony with your team, remain silent and calm when someone is trying to goad you, and practice your skills endlessly. That is what will impress others, not the fact that you've played the game long enough to know where all of the advantages and exploits lie.
Remember, do not proclaim to be the best, as there is always going to be somebody more adept who can lay waste to you. If you are the best, then sooner or later someone will topple you and take your place. That is how it has always been. You may never meet those players, and live in your little world of illusion, but that will not change the truth.
In short, leave the Hacks, exploits, and cheap tricks to the less skilled. Victory or Death!
