I Have always loved Hunter S. Thompson but I always feel sad when I see these later interviews. He's become a caricature, the embodiment of Raoul Duke. The brilliant author has become his most flamboyant creation.
What always fascinated me about Hunter was his perception, his ability to rip the cover off and expose the bloated underbelly of American society. He was so much more than just an intoxicated lunatic but in the later interviews that's all we see. It's a pity to see the clown's lunacy take precedence over his laser sharp observations, thrillingly inventive prose, beautifully empathetic take on human life, and his honest and eviscerating portrayal of American politics.
But the machine, I suppose, needs to be fed and even Hunter couldn't stand up to it forever.
