Disappointing.

After their recent success with tech demo "Wolfenstein 3D", id Software had the chance to push boundaries with their engine and make something truly special. They've wasted that potential for moving the medium forward, and instead opted for yet another brainless blast-em-all action game.

In fact the new features that Doom boasts are varying height levels and more weapons. If that's all they wanted to do, they may have done better shipping a copy of Ultima Underworld in the box instead. Where id could have given us characters and story, they gave us chainsaws and viscera. How can games ever be taken seriously when our developers do not extend themselves beyond mere schlock horror?

Doom shows id for what they truly are. A company of technical marvels, but mired in camp where they could be crafting epics. Years from now, we'll be playing the latest Origin titles, acknowledging them for their depth of work, for making gaming meaningful.

But id, id will be long forgotten
