Paid 22,49€ for a 4-pack for my friends and I eleven years ago and not a dime since then (except for gifting copies to more friends!). The game is relevant and supported to this day. Greatest value purchase of my life.

Writing a full review seems redundant, but I wanna give a big commendation to the intricacy of all the game's quality of life features, such as the situational dynamic/smart hotkeys and inventory management tools, which are often overlooked. The game's attention to detail goes much deeper than most people will ever know.

Don't trust the bunnies.

Welcome to Getting Over It PTSD: The Game

Pogostuck is very obviously heavily inspired by Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy, from the gameplay gimmick down to the visuals and level design. Even the music kicking in to mock you whenever you make a particularly devastating mistake is here.

If you've spent any amount of time scaling the familiar mountain that we all know and hate (and perhaps also love, somewhere deep down), then that should give you a good indication of what type of game is. The pogo stick offers a mechanic of physics-based movement similar to that of the hammer, but controlling it is its own unique flavour of frustration. It is more focused on chaining together multiple jumps in succession and retaining momentum, rather than performing tricky individual leaps. If you've gotten good at climbing mountains using a hammer, that's not gonna do you many favours. Prepare for déjà vu. You're gonna have to learn to climb all over again.

Unlike Getting Over It, Pogostuck has a very neat online component that seamlessly phases in both random players and friends around you. You can even see your friends' characters in hibernation wherever they last left off when they stopped playing. This feature is configurable and can be turned off.

I don't like the game as much as Getting Over It, but if you are the type of person that enjoys this kind of self-punishment, then Pogostuck fills that void.

I hope you've renewed your prescription for muscle relaxants.

may appear to be just youtube bait at first glance, but getting over it is a thoroughly well-crafted labour of love. insidious, spiteful, twisted love. made just for you.

don't forget to take your muscle relaxants before playing

First of all we need to be clear: Pony Island is a game that is not about ponies. No matter how central of an element they may appear to be you must not treat them as such.

Pony Island is a fairly short game, which works to its advantage with its ludicrous plot and mish-mosh of puzzles, simple minigames and pointy-clicky type gameplay. It's novel, it's cute, it knows what it is and it doesn't overstay its welcome.

The gameplay is more a driving point for the story, which is silly yet also cryptic, with some unexpected points of intrigue. The music is frantic and on point for what the game is going for. There are quite a few secrets to uncover throughout the game and it's unlikely one would find them all unless following a guide. Hunting for the secrets will clue you in further on the story and are worth sussing out if you care to dig further into it.

Overall a fun, interesting little diversion. Not world-changing as one might hope from a game titled Pony Island, but still worth checking out. Easily my favourite pony-themed non-pony game.

Note: This game only supports local multiplayer. However, since this review was originally written Steam has added a feature called Remote Play Together which allows you to play games that do not natively support online play with friends by having one person stream a video of the game to other participants whilst receiving input from their controllers, thus enabling a way to play local multiplayer games over the internet. This feature can be used to play Towerfall 'online', but keep in mind that whoever is hosting the session should have a solid connection with a good upload speed and the participants will experience input delay depending on their latency to the host. Under the right conditions it works quite well, but be aware that your circumstances may vary.

(The review below was written before Remote Play Together existed and I'm too lazy to update it.)

Towerfall Ascension is first and foremost an incredibly solid 2-4 player versus arena game, with tight controls and mechanics that are both straightforward and dizzying. Each arena encompasses a single screen that wraps around from left to right and top to bottom, which can be utilized to attack from unanticipated angles. A feature I really like is that you have a limited amount of arrows which need to be picked up again after firing, and they're open for grabs by anyone. There are a buttload of game modifiers available to make the games more interesting/silly/frantic/competitive, whatever your desires fancy.

It's fast-paced, intense bow-and-arrow goodness -- under the right conditions. The versus mode is entirely reliant on having friends in your local vicinity to play with due to its lack of online play. As good as the game is this leaves the main feature with a limited audience, out of reach for many who would probably love it.

Besides the versus mode it does have a couple of modes for co-operative or solo play, which I find very enjoyable, but they're certainly not very fleshed-out features. The main one is called co-op mode, which is bizarrely mislabeled as it can be played and enjoyed just as well alone. It's a campaign mode where you fight waves of monsters across each of the different themed stages. It's got two difficulties and a challenging achievement or three. Worth mentioning is that the Dark World expansion also has its own campaign, which is the same at its core but is far superior to the one in the base game.

Lastly there's the time trial mode, which is about what it sounds like. The goal is to destroy all the targets in each stage as fast as possible with the resources given in that stage. It's singleplayer only and it's probably not everyone's cup of tea, but the challenges are well-designed and if you enjoy this type of thing it's pretty dang engrossing.

There are additional stages and characters to be unlocked by playing through the campaign, as well as ones unlocked through other, non-straightforward means. You may want to look up a guide if you wish to find them all.

I would sing only praises for this game were it not for its unfortunate limitations. I personally think it's worth picking up even as a singleplayer game for its inherent charm, but that's a sentiment I think would vary wildly for others. Eight cherub hearts and a BibleThump out of ten.
