You know, I never realized how well rounded of a person you are. That and the fact that you have so many wonderful guns makes me want to ask you out >> But yeah, we gotta play together again sometime. o/

I have no other alternatives you see. I can only get 5.56 NATO from phillipines as its the only country producing them and selling them to me.(1box of 30 rounds is USD45 while 30 rounds of 5.45R is around $12-25 depending on which country [russia/china]) If i were to order ammo from the US or EU it would cost me more than a ACOG. Hence, i stopped purchasing ammunition and stopped firing the AR-15 due to opportunity costs as very little AR is available in my country as most gun owners usually have bolt action rifles or shotguns. (Mostly Mosin, Springfield, Enfield MKII, SKS, mossberg or remington)


Therefore the AR is just a house decor now(and somewhat a chore to clean every week) and i spend time with my AK more in the field and shooting range. I even gave my AK a name and even sleep with her by my side x3 (no rounds chambered in of course) even my girlfriend is sometimes jealous xP

Just make sure that any rounds you fire are SAAMI/NATO standard and don't trust ammo from a brand that you believe uses brass casings of poor or impure quality. Good ammo might be more expensive, but if it means retaining the value of your gun (and your personaly safety), then the marginal difference in expense is really inconsequential, right?

Even if it is your preference, I don't think it is wise to intentionally set out to abuse/damage a firearm or collect dust/carbon in it. That's a dangerous combination for personal safety and I would strongly advise against it. But hey, I'm not your Mom. *L*

I don't think that ArmaLite is necessarily bad quality. Of course I prefer Colt to Armalite and IMO Colt manufactures to a higher standard of quality and accuracy than ArmaLite. But I would not say that ArmaLite produces a firearm so inferior that it is poor quality with bad parts.

Since you mention that 5.56 brass rounds are usually poor in quality and expensive in the Philippines, what about .223 Remington? You're able to shoot both .223 and 5.56 from an AR chambered for 5.56. I looked it up for you on ArmaLite's site if you don't want to take my word for it:

My AR is from ArmaLite therefore has bad quality the first time i got it from the Mil. And most 5.56 rounds that are available to me are philipine made brass rounds and also poor in quality which is why i have trouble maintaining the AR and spare parts and accessories are super expensive here.

Thats why my Norinco Full auto AK clone (type 56) is undoubtly preferred as the 5.45 rounds came straight from Norinco or Izhmash and unsurprisingly parts and accessories are reliably cheap and available.


Call me a masochist, but I like the way how i purposely abuse the AK and try to damage and put dust in it and fire it and still love it very much while the AR on the other hand has to be taken care of. Like a girl.

Also, I might as well ask: Did you clean the AR when you first bought it? Because after Colt runs a test fire they coat the parts in a special grease to prevent corrosion while the gun sits in storage. It is not the same as gun oil, so if you don't field strip and clean off the preservative before lubing/firing, you might be seeing unnecessary buildup issues from that too.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that ut needing a cleaning once a week could be normal, or it could be a symptom of a larger problem. Personally, I make a habit of cleaning my AR after every firing session, and any gun that I've taken shooting gets cleaned once a week regardless. Maybe it is a girl thing, but I like to think of it as a general respect for the care and upkeep of my firearms type of thing.

Once a week sounds normal, but depending on how many rounds your firing, it could also be unnecessary. I've gone 5,000 rounds before without my AR needing a cleaning and it could probably go for 5,000 more.

What kind of rounds are you firing? The AR is designed specifically for brass cased ammo. The brass case expands to seal the chamber and prevent the backward travel of gases against the bolt when firing ("obturation"). Alternative casings will expand at a different rate and cause buildup/damage over time. If you're using steel-cased ammo because it is cheaper, then that is why you're having to clean so often. The powders that they use on the cheaper casings will leave more residue on the receiver and mess up the gas/bolt. Basically you'll see way more carbon buildup than is normal.

And also, a 5.45 norinco/romanian AK clone is much better than an AR-15 because i own both! the AR is too troublesome in my opinion as i need to clean it almost every week and 5.56 is expensive compared to 5.45R
