There were two thing Oblivion did better than its prequel Morrowind: The graphics and the combat. People are still working on mods that can make this game actually look better than Oblivion in some respects, but you do have to put up with how bad the combat system is, at least until you get a fairly high level in whatever weapon you're using.

Despite this it is a far, far better game than Oblivion. There are several full-length novels worth of writing in the form of books that you can browse and read in game. Every cave, crypt, shipwreck and tower you go into has a story behind it that you can discover, or choose to ignore and just steal everything. The spellmaking and enchanting systems are much more flexible: I once made a character that only wore a robe, but could use that robe to summon a full set of ethereal armour.

If you liked Oblivion, you'll like this more if you can get past the faults of its age. After quickly getting bored of Oblivion I reinstalled this and was happy.

It did two things: Showed what you could do with a great storyline and was the best blend of FPS and RPG I've ever seen, even now. Amazing cyberpunk universe full of conspiracy and intrigue, with you in the centre of it all. Get past the old UT99 engine graphics and you'll never play a better single-player RPG, and that includes Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the other Bioware games. It got both the storytelling and the action perfect.
