This sequel follows directly on from the original Deponia game, so it might not be the best for people who haven't played the original. However, there are some really fun and intelligent puzzles and a great sense of humour throughout the majority of this game... I say throughout... it does die off for a bit about three quarts of the way through... But if you like adventure games, I distinctly think that the Deponia series should be in your collection.

Let's be honest, it's a Hidden Object game. It succeeds very well in being a Hidden Object game. Most of the puzzles can be solved with a bit of logic, but if you've played some of the puzzle games like Professor Layton or Puzzle Agent, you'll be able to solve many by memory, rather than logic. Most of the hidden object areas aren't the hardest and there's a good hint system to help you out.
Voice acting seems to be by the same guys who do Watson and Holmes in the other Frogwares games, if you're particularly attached to them.
If you like Hidden Object games, this is probably a game that you will enjoy for a few horus.
(PS... This isn't exactly how the real story goes... This is more... Sherlock Holmes with superpowers and time travel... But hey, Sherlock Holmes with superpowers and time travel, right!?)

This is a bad game. I hate to say this, but this is a bad game and an even worse adventure game.

I still like Nina and Max is alright, but it was a struggle to power on through this game. Most of the situations are totally abstract which the developers use to excuse their needlessly odd solutions to puzzles. The "minigames" all have the option of easy or difficult. Easy is tedious and boring and difficult is the same, but you have to do it longer. Oh and this game is weird.

I sigh, but I suppose if you are a Secret Files fan, like myself, you will buy this game anyway, but if you're looking for a good adventure game and figure this is a recent one from a company with a pedigree, it's a mistake. Take a look at The Next Big Thing or Deponia instead.

This game is not the Max Payne you may know and love. If you cannot bear the thought of changes to a beloved franchise, this isn't the game for you.
Are they gone? Good. Okay, so, this is a good game. It's got its weaknesses, but it's fun to play, has characters that are as likable as required and a world as dark as the snow in Valhalla on a cold winters night. It's a fun game and is surprisingly long for a modern shooter. You could think of it more in the vein of a Bruce Wills film than a Max Payne game and I think you'd enjoy it more. There's even a gunfight in the baggage area of an airport, ala Die Hard 2.
I think you'd enjoy it, if you can find it in a good sale sometime (yes, I wrote this when it was on sale).

This was a fun game with a few annoying bugs, such as the fact it can take up to two full minutes to pause on occasion. However, the game itself is enjoyable and a sure contender for the best looking game I've played all year, if you care for the aesthetic.
It's a 2D Action platformer with Randall Wayne trying to escape from "Shadows" (read: zombies) and find his lost family. There are weapons in the game, but they are primarily for the platform puzzles.

Oh right. And there's a sewer level.

I'll open by saying that within a minute of closing this game on completion, I knew this was easily my Game of the Year.

There are issues: 1) There is no skipping of dialog and it uses a checkpoint system. This means that sometimes it's a pain to stop playing without having to sit through a scene all over again. 2) On Windows 8 , if you have a wireless 360 pad connected, the game will not launch. There is a fix for this, but it's a bit of a pain. 3) There is currently an issue with savegames getting corrupted. To reduce the chance of this happening, always let Steam sync your saves when you close the game. Savegames are recoverable if they are corrupted, but again, it's an annoyance.

Despite these, I have never played such an immersive, emotional game before. It is difficult not to become attached to every one of these characters, which makes it painful when they start to fall. The decisions are tough, but if they weren't this wouldn't be the game it was. As the game progresses, it gets harder and harder to make the tough decisions, when the people you have grown to care about are at risk. But you will. And if you let this game take you in, you will have... An experience.

I liked this game. Quite a bit.

Mark of the Ninja is possibly the best game I've played all year. Well balanced, good looking and perfectly architected, this game was both fun and tense at times. There is satisfaction is using your ninja gadgets to clear a room of guards, there is satisfaction in freezing in mid air to throw kunai at three different targets, dropping a smokebomb and grappling away and there is satisfaction in sneaking through leaving no sign you were there.
I can barely recommend this game enough for its worth.

This is a game that progressively gets better as the game progresses. The combat and enemies are... well, about what you'd expect for a DmC style game, but there are also a few puzzles in this game that are real brain teasers. So fun, interesting, and... thinky, I enjoyed sitting back and relaxing with this game whilst I had it. I went straight for Darksiders 2 after this. I expect many would do the same.

A surprisingly good adventure game. If you're already an adventure game fan, this is definitely one to pick up. The story is good enough, the comedy is there, the voice acting is, for the most part good, barring a couple of characters and most importantly, the puzzles are logical. Chances are, if you get stuck, you'll find out the answer and be slapping your own forehead, than throwing the game out the window. This is a game, however, where pressing spacebar to reveal hotspots could save a few of those head slapping moments. I'll be waiting to pick up Chaos on Deponia.

If you enjoy games that make you think, there is possibly no better game I have ever played for this. The gameplay is fun throughout and just when you're unprepared for it, the game will find a way to knock you back. The writer said one of the game's endings is for the player to put down the controller and stop playing. That it is.
If you're looking for a fun shooter, you can probably give this one a miss. There's more visceral shooters out there. But if you're looknig for something unique and special, that will stay with you when you walk away from the game, this is truly a must buy.

Broken Sword 3 comes from an era when all adventure games felt the need to go 3D with mandatory action sequences and suffers for it, sadly. There are points at which the puzzles are are a little weak, or the conversations a little stilted... But this remains a Broken Sword game. This should be nobody's first Broken Sword game, but if you have passed through the first two games, this is a reasonable next step. However, do be wary of the three million and seven crate-pushing puzzles that this game includes. They will get tedious after the very first.

A game which simply pulses with Obsidian's trademarks. The game is fantastic for its inventiveness and truly original ideas. We can only hope that more and more games will be inspired by this game. To list everything that this game does new would take too long and ruin the surprise you'll find as you play it.
This is the game for anyone who... Anyone who can look past a few bugs and an imperfect engine for a great experience. Just buy it. I'm sure it's cheap enough by now.

If you've just finished Alan Wake, this should be your next stop. AWAN gives you the chance to leave the series with a smile on your face. Far more colourful and weird than Alan Wake itself, Alan is trapped in an episode of Night Springs that he wrote whilst Mr Scratch goes on a murder spree wearing Alan's face.
If you enjoyed Alan Wake, you must play this game. If you didn't play Alan Wake, this will be totally indecipherable.

This game is an ode to Stephen King and spectacularly recreates the atmosphere of King's books. Follow Alan as he attempts to fight The Darkness and save his wife from the cluthes of Cauldron Lake.
Fantastic looking forests of Maine and great lighting effects coupled with an excellent story and perfect atmosphere makes this a game I recommend that you don't miss.
(Don't miss the DLC episodes hidden in the Episodes main menu)

There are many games that people play for years and think "Wow! The value for money here!" and sometimes, a game comes along that you play for a few days and still feel the value in. Sleeping Dogs is one of the second group. It's unlikely to keep you returning for years, but travelling through the streets of Hong Kong on the trail of the Triads. combing gunplay, driving and kung-fu wizardry is an enjoyable and action-packed experience.
Of all the GTA-a-likes I've played, this is probably the one I played for the shortest time and the one I enjoyed the most.

Entirely opposite to the game that preceded it, Dreamfall begins strong and grows weaker as time passes. Unfortunately, this game comes from the era when every adventure game felt the need to include mandatory action sequences, almsot exclusively poorly implemented, with this as no exception.
Zoe is a lovely character though and the game is enoyable enough. It's a certain addition to the collection of any adventure game fan, but I doubt you'll pull it off the shelves too often.
September 9th, 2012 @ 7:51am
A game deserving of its place in the annals of adventure game history. It starts a little weak and then throws too much at you too fast, but just play through the scenes and do the good thing and you can enjoy this adventure in saving the destiny of two separate worlds.
September 9th, 2012 @ 7:48am
This is a game that had a terrible release. The reviews you read from that time will all be bad, but patches over time made this game something you can really enjoy and I did just that. Think Borderlands, but... well, I thought more interesting, with more range of weapons.

The game suddenly jumps from melee to guns in Act 2, so you might want to be prepared for that and there are a hundred tiny niggles that bother and annoy, but overall, this game is bigger than you expect, more varied than you expect and better than you expect.

Buy it cheap and enjoy.

This is the game where Pendulo really started to find their feet in making a good adventure game. Most of the parts of the game that are weak are actually from trying to support things from Runaway 1 and 2. Gina and Brian co-star in this game that begins with Brian's funeral with flashbacks discovering just how our hero ended up where he did.
With a doubleclick speed-walk system and a hint system that's actually fun to use (and yes, I did use it a couple of times), Pendulo have learned from their past flaws and worked up to a new high. The game is beautiful, the characters are entertaining and the puzzles are almsot exclusively clever.
It's hard to recommend this game to people who have not played Runaway 1 and 2 (it ties in fairly closely), but at the same time, it's a great adventure game. The Next BIG Thing is funnier... Yesterday has a couple of neater tweaks, but this is the best overall.
August 11th, 2012 @ 10:06am
In some ways, an improvement on the first Runaway game, in others, it's not as good. If you enjoyed the first game, I'd pick this one up for sure, but I probably wouldn't recommend approaching it without. The first half of the game is set in beautiful tropics and the colour and art is actually really nice. Some... interesting writing and a few annoying puzzles, but the last half hour will be some of the most frustrating that you will have ever experienced.
It is probably best as a buffer between Runaway: A Road Adventure and Runaway: A Twist of Fate, but if you like Pendulo adventures, this is clearly one.

If you are a true adventure game fan, this game should be in your catalog. There are a few things to be wary of. Just about every rule of making a good adventure game is broken by this game. You'll have to go back and repeat an action with no clue that it will magically give different results this time and worst of all, one action will need to be repeated more than three times (involving four screen changes, two dialogue pieces and an inventory combination, all exactly the same) which will make you question your sanity. Don't worry, it's the developers who weren't sane.

Despite these flaws, the game is a solid adventure game with puzzles that are usually interesting and rarely obscure. I had a few puzzles I struggled on, but the solutionalways made sense when I found it. (Nine times out of ten, I missed an object in my pixel hunting... Oh yeah, this game has pixel hunting). When this game does puzzles, it does them well.

You'll take a little bit of good with a little bit of bad. This is probably the best gameplay in a Pendulo adventure, but don't expect the lighthearted humour of The Next BIG Thing. This is a dark story with dark things being dark.
The intro is not the most inspiring start, but if you get through it... It was actually pretty intriguing the whole way through... Then it ended. Short, but I enjoyed it. Figure out what that means to you.
July 18th, 2012 @ 1:46pm
The Next BIG Thing is dis.... concerting, but in a good way! :) Honestly, this is probably one of the funniest adventure games I've played (for a very unusual sense of humour) and I've played a looooooot of adventure games :)
Puzzle-wise, it's the usual fare... stick on rope to make masterwork fishing pole , but everything's logical and there's a hint system if you get stuck.
July 16th, 2012 @ 10:13pm
I can't guarentee that you'll be playing this game two or three times... But I can tell you that if you like smashing zombies that look a bit like atoms, you'll love this game :) I had some serious fun with it and I will almost certainly be... You know what, I'm off to play it again now :)
December 27th, 2011 @ 2:13pm
You reeeeeeeally need me to tell you why this game is good? You're insane. You're on my friends list, chances are, you already love this game :)
July 3rd, 2011 @ 1:04pm
This is very likely the most beautiful game you'll ever playand it's fun to boot (though frustrating at times) :).
It's a truly unique experience that you'll probably only see more of when Brink comes out. :)
November 20th, 2010 @ 9:19am
This game sits firmly on my number 2 slot for best games ever. It's fun, it's great, it's still a little beautiful and it doesn't take itself too seriously. :) Also, I'm fairly certain they were working on Bullet Time pre-Matrix...
If you like Film Noir, this game should be irresistible.
November 20th, 2010 @ 9:16am
Quite simply my favourite game of all time. :)
It doesn't hold up so well after all these years but if you want to see a game -way- ahead of it's time, Deus Ex is the one. :) And with Deus Ex 3 coming out soon, it's a great time to get some history! ... DX3 is a prequal.... Okay... Get some future! :)
