Horrible.

I'm not talking about the game being mediocre. I genuinely think it's awful, the worst game I've ever played. I played Fallout: New Vegas for around 1,000 hours and Fallout 3 for 500 hours. I played Fallout 1 and 2 in anticipation of Fallout 4 and loved them. I was one of the first people to see the teaser site and one of the first to pre order. I purchased the game and after playing for 30 minutes I realized that this isn't the Fallout I knew and loved. I played another 15 hours straight trying to enjoy myself. I wrote my opinions online and in my Steam review the day after launch. I was one of the only people that didn't recommend it and out of thousands of fans I was the only one that hated it.

I think the game was stripped clean. All the RPG features completely removed. It felt like a hollow shell of a game I once loved. The weapons system has been oversimplified and my favorite weapon features of the old games was removed. Durability and unique weapons no longer existed. Looting became a chore, no longer was there any satisfaction to finding a weapon, I no longer enjoyed scavenging. The entire world felt completely empty. As I left the vault and walked around I genuinely regretted my purchase. The game I waited 7 years for, and I already wanted to uninstall it.

The skill and S.P.E.C.I.A.L system was completely ruined. Now your special traits meant absolutely nothing. You could simply use the infinite leveling system to cap out all your special traits. This completely removed any character diversity further drying up the RPG that it once was. The perks were a pathetic replacement for the previous games skill/perk system. The devs were so ♥♥♥♥ing lazy they made an entire set of perks just for increasing weapons damage for every weapon type.

The story was awful. I've never felt so much apathy for a video game character in my entire life. The entire plot lore wise didn't even make sense especially because of the endings. They removed lore from the Fallout universe. And in many ways this literally killed the franchise for me. I feel embarased to say I actually was so interested in the Fallout universe I researched and listened to all the lore.

All locations were simply filled with enemies to kill and loot. This is just a failure of the video game industry overall as of recently. Games in general are following in this games footsteps. They're removing the story, implementing an open world, removing all RPG elements and calling it a new game.

The only decent thing about the game is the settlement building system. But somehow, Bethesda still managed to ♥♥♥♥ that up. Since the overwhelming majority of content is locked behind a paywall. There's a build limit too and you can only build in specific locations.
A month ago I reinstalled the game after having it hidden in my Steam library. I installed dozens of mods to make it more like the previous games. But the damage was done, the foundation of the game was broken, modding can only do so much. This game is a failure in every possible way. And they still didn't update the game engine and the graphics are mediocre.

I just had to write my thoughts down somewhere. I can't stand seeing Bethesda; my former inspiration, ruin franchise after franchise.
