The United States regulars were the best fighting force in the United States. They were used in just about every war the U.S. has ever fought; though their fame was made in the early wars such as the American Civil War (1861-1865) also the Mexican American War (1845-1848). Many famous commanders were a part of the Regulars at one point or another. Examples being: Robert E. Lee, Winnfield Scott Hancock, Winfield Scott, Charles Griffon, U.S. Grant, Ambrose Powell Hill, James Longstreet, George Pickett, John Gibbon, and many others. There uniform was made up of: a black felt hat, blue frock coat, blue trousers, white leggings, and a pare of leather boots worn under the leggings. A famous brigade formed by Brig.Gen. John Gibbon known as the "Black Hat Brigade" used this same uniform and became one of the best fighting units in the entire Union Army of the Potomac. After the battle of South Mountain they earned their new name the "Iron Brigade" and fought till the end of the American Civil War.
