it's Desktop Dungeons with a few new features and balance changes, along with a new aesthetic that is kind of just whatever to me. i'm not entirely sure i'd call significant enough to warrant buying it again, but the devs were epic and gave it to all owners of the previous version for free and you can even import your old save and i've already put tons of time into it so i guess It's Good.

it's interesting that most of the levels in this sliding puzzle game are free, but to subsidize that you have jason's mom's head constantly annoying you to purchase microtransactions for cosmetics which can really only be seen by yourself in this single-player affair. what's worse is to get all the achievements legitimately you have to unlock all the weapons by either continuing to replay the game or buying your way out. feels awfully predatory toward completionists

frankly i'd recommend just purchasing Slayaway Camp, which is basically the same game from the same developer without the Friday the 13th license, to avoid these shady practices

a surprisingly fun MOBA Battle Royale that never feels like there's any downtime in game due to how many frigging things you have to pay attention to

some of the mechanics still need a bit of work but my only issues are that the servers are apparently made of toast which is why the game has a lag spike every time someone dies and also there's not enough English players to the point that the EU server isn't even open half of the day

also the English voice acting is really bad, you can change it to Korean but you'd also have to learn Korean to recognize the voice cues for when your character sees a dead body if you're not paying attention yourself like my dumb ass doesn't

Dreaming Sarah is a puzzle-platformer inspired by Yume Nikki. It controls well, the pixel art is nice enough, and the soundtrack is chill, but other than that it's just bland. The vast majority of the areas of this game are not remotely as interesting as the game it is inspired by — a forest, desert, lava caves, and a haunted house are basically what you'd find in a typical Mario game and don't really pique the imagination. Even the more abstract areas feel like they're there to waste my time looping around the map to find an item or an exit rather than actual setpieces to take in.

Furthermore, most of the NPCs in the game are human or humanoid, a disappointing contrast from the complex designs found in Yume Nikki that remain haunting to this day. I also don't like how the NPCs can talk to you and how some give you quests — this definitely made the game feel less dreamlike and more videogamey, and also led to some confusion. There ended up being several NPCs that I thought I'd have to do something for given how they would speak about a weird flower or how the desert is easy to get lost in, but I've gotten every achievement at this point and I'm pretty sure they're red herrings.

Even the equivalent of "Effects" in this game fail to excite. There's only 8 and none of them are visual treats nor are they ever utilized to their full potential. For example, near the end of the game you get a watch that allows you to slow down time. It doesn't change how Sarah looks at all and it's only used for one puzzle in a nearby room. There's a shell necklace that allows Sarah to turn into a fish and swim through water, which is cute, but it's also the only real transformation in the game and again it's used very sparsely.

Lastly, if you're the kind of person who's into Yume Nikki for the lore, Dreaming Sarah likely isn't going to satsify. Outside of a few very obvious scenes concerning how Sarah got into her coma, there didn't seem to be a whole lot that let me read into her character or the real world she may inhabit.

Overall, Dreaming Sarah only feels "inspired by the horror game Yume Nikki" in the most surface-level aspects, with none of the wow-factor that made Yume Nikki such a cult classic in the first place; and outside of the comparisons, what we're left with is a dull platformer that fails to leave any impression across its hour-and-a-half long playtime. Just take a nap instead, you'll probably have better dreams.
