Evoland starts out as an interesting game, appearing as a synopsis of the history of action-adventure games. The player first starts out as a 2D sprite reminiscent of what you might find on an old GameBoy - in fact, at first the game plays quite similar to an early Legend of Zelda. As the player progresses through the game, they unlock and upgrade improvements such as better graphics, music and actions.
As the game goes on the style switches to that of Final Fantasy 7, particularly the combat system. Unfortunately this is also where the game suddenly drops off in its potential. Rather than continuing with its premise of evolving the technological level of the game, it instead becomes a rehash of the Final Fantasy 7 plot, and not a very good one at that. Several of the events near the end of the game can be seen coming from a mile away and, quite frankly, it's just not very interesting.

All-in-all, the game starts out with a lot of potential but throws it all out of the window halfway through in favor of an uninspired retelling of FF7. As such, I find it to be a disappointing title that could've been so much more, and thus I can't recommend it.
