"My story is comfortless. It isn't sweet or happy as fictional stories are. It has shades of senselessness and confusion, of madness and dreams, like the lives of those people who no longer delude themselves." -- Herman Hesse
I absolutely love this game. It plays like a combination of R.U.S.E. and World in Conflict but has far more units than either. It is the only game I can think of that actually includes all variants of vehicles from 4 nations on each side(Nato is U.S., UK, France, West Germany, Pact is U.S.S.R., Poland, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany). You can mix units from differant nations together to form a "deck" you play with. Units do not automatically repair and can run out of ammo or fuel, so the use of supply vehicles is necissary as well as maintaining a supply line. Maps are very large so infantry spawn in vehicles (APCs IFVs or helicopters) each nation having their own kinds of such transports. Good units can be easilly killed by a well placed counter, for example a person could be using Mi-28 Havocs or AH-64 Apaches and get them instantly killed by aa if they aren'tcareful. If you like realistic games and want a fun semi-modern(1975-'85) rts this might be the game for you.
The game was in a nearly unplayable state at launch with severe lag, a nonfunctioning server browser, and frequent crashes as well as being a change in the pacing as well as other elements of gameplay that many players of the original found offputing. The game managed to attract many players at launch, eventually getting to the point where it gathered over 10000 players online. This launched in a market dominated by huge companies and had still sold very well, the company's biggest launch ever. The dust finally settled and many players left due to the issues I have described but I never completely left.I saw this go from the unplayable mess it was at launch to a functioning, fun game but still not the experiance I loved in the original. The updates started gaining frequency and the developer started communicating more with the community, this is the approach tripwire has taken with this game, to continusly improve and update it.

The gunplay sucks if you are looking for that, the production values are at times very low and the voice acting can be horrendous at times, it can be an extremely buggy piece of shit but if you can get past that, there are few games that can hit this mark of storytelling and immersion. This is the type of game that you can actually ponder the meaning of certain events from a story that leaves a large ammount of grey area, this is not the result of poor writing but of truly inciteful writers who actually care about what effect every litte detail might have on the player's understanding. It is certainly not a game to sit back and just shoot some assholes, but a game that you will undoubtedly remember.
