A beautiful adventure game with a wonderfully dark and intriguing story, all enshrouded in a stunning presentation akin to German Expressionism and film noir.

In a market over-saturated with instant-satisfaction run-and-gun shooters, there has been a lingering void of video games that focus heavily on tactical decision-making, deception and patience. Frozen Synapse not only fills this void but also offers gameplay that remains and will remain addictive and satisfying for years to come. What makes this turn-based, strategic game extremely gratifying is the ability to not only issue complex multi-layered orders to each of your own individual units but also the ability to issue the same extent of orders to the units of your opponent — providing the capability to explore and simulate how you might expect your opponent to carry out his or her next move. Regardless of whether or not your opponent reacts in the way you might have prognosticated, the anticipation to see the outcome of the next move can at times be overwhelmingly exhilarating. This coupled with an exceptional soundtrack and visuals is indicative of how excellent indie games can be.

Video games are a very subjective experience, much more than any other medium of art and entertainment. In a peculiar way, Amnesia is both for and against this sentiment in that it has an uncanny way of emotionally stirring the player but also makes the player react in the same way as others. The brilliant rigging of in-game events, design of the audio and the overall presentation of the game creates an unforgettable experience - unforgettable because it is possibly the most frightening & terrifying game to ever be developed. And that is not at all a bad thing; the game is extremely immersive because of how gripping and tense the game world becomes as a result of its ingenious design. It can be so immersive in fact that it can cause players to shut down the game because the discomfort and horror composed by the game world can be too emotionally heavy & distressing. This is what video games should be, a direct and interactive emotional experience, and Amnesia executes this flawlessly.

The epitome of tactical first person shooter video games, and unfortunately the last of its kind. The gameplay of Rainbow Six 3 focuses heavily on the careful formulation and execution of player-made tactical plans in hypothetical scenarios, having players designate specific waypoints and commands to squads of soldiers in the game world (of which they also play the soldiers themselves after planning) in order to complete various objectives. While this may seem tiresome and mundane for players wanting instant and intense action (planning is optional), the reward for having a tactical plan execute successfully is extremely satisfying, considering the difficulty of the scenarios and the respective time taken to fully plan for them. Throw in a completely seamless multiplayer component and the thrills of planning tactical missions together with friends become unforgettably fun.

DEFCON is a unique strategic game that employs a great sense of atmosphere and immersion through its simplicity. Because of its simplicity the importance of the interactions with other players becomes paramount to the enjoyment of DEFCON - and it works. It may seem risky that the game relies on the performance of the players, but the design and art of the game (the soundtrack in particular) induces players to act in a paranoid and tenacious fashion. There is deceit, lying, trickery, backstabbing - it is like a game of poker, but with fantastically chilling music and nuclear weapons. DEFCON is a very fun game and I would recommend it to anyone.

Civilization V is outstanding in all its aspects - engaging and accessible gameplay topped with a superb soundtrack; the best of its kind. Highly recommended for anyone who likes strategy games that are played at your own pace.

It's alright.

Intense, quick and explosive gameplay. Great multiplayer component that is still fun despite the many sequels to the game due to its simplicity and lack of complexity.

A very fun and enjoyable action game from Valve that's also free! Despite it's short length, there's plenty of community-produced content to come.

A highly addictive and enjoyable arcade game. Shatter is able to take the oldest and most fundamental gameplay mechanic - ping & pong - and use it to make a fun and intense game, with the delightful sprinkling of a very funky soundtrack (which is even worth buying on its own). Highly recommend Shatter for the arcade-fan in you, and also too boost your friends-only-scoreboard-domination ego in you.
