I really want to recommend this game for it's fantastic level design and soundtrack, but there is just one problem that placed my review in the negative.
The controls for this game are atrocious. Usually I play fast-paced platformers with a controller to give myself precise movement when going from point A to point B, but the fact that this game can barely keep the button input to controller really bugs me. I can only play 10 minutes of the game before the game purposely messes up my controller scheme and I end up dying. The majority of my deaths in this game come from this problem.

SEGA, it's been 5 years since this game came out. Why havn't you fixed this problem yet?

You people might be saying, "Well, why can't you just get used to the keyboard controls?" Because the keyboard controls feel wonky controling Sonic around; it works well with the classic stages since they are all 2-D, but in the modern stages is where the problem of controling Sonic comes in, since his stages switch to 3-D. Modern Sonic feels stiff controlling with 4 directional buttons compared to the joystick of a controller.

Overall, I would say just buy a console version of this game. You will enjoy it better than this version. Unless someone can find a solution to the controller problem, I will not recommend this version of the game.

Apparently changing to Windows 7 and replacing my HDD fixed the problem...
I played for longer than 10 minutes and my controls didn't screw up. Might have to rewrite my review later once I start to get the hang of the game again.

I think I used to have the issue of my controller disconnecting I think. It was fixed when I upgraded my graphics card.

I have looked up countless user fixes for this problem and so far all of them have failed.

This problem is exclusive to you alone, and you clearly don't care enough to look up the issue you're having, and you don't try to fix it.
