A thrilling space shooter, if a tad short. The controls are simple but precise and the battles are exciting and action packed. One thing I disliked about the game was the capital ship hacking. While interesting in concept, it's difficult to try concentrate on it while you have to at the same time dodge incoming anti-fighter fire and can be downright frustrating at times when you're on a time crunch. Over all, for $10, it's a pretty good buy and I have a feeling it will have a lot of added on features as time goes by.
Evochron Mercenary is one of the few alternative games for those who are fans of space exploration, combat, and trade games such as the X Series and Freelancer. What Evochron does special is really nailing how seamlessly it stitches its universe together. As it says, there are no loading screens between locations. Everything is simulated in one environment, planets, ships, stations and all. Also, this is by far the most realistic space flight simulator I have ever seen. While the X series and Freelancer are good games in their own right, they are hardly realistic. There was always that sense of friction holding you back. In Evochron, you really can flip your ship around in all directions while flying in another at full speed. While complex to master it can make for very unique combat and navigation possibilities. The UI is complicated, and at times confusing, but once you've gotten used to it it can make for an enjoyable and unique space simulator experience
Despite coming out in 2004, this game manages to still impress me with the depth of gameplay, and visuals. I have yet to see a kind of space tactics simulator on the market that really approaches what Nexus achieves. I can only hope that the rumors of a Nexus 2 coming out later this year have merit to them
