Yeah, which makes the rewind absolutely useless. In most cases you're better off with a full reset since the chance that you screwed up the puzzle from the beginning are pretty high.
Sure the slowness ties well with the mood of the game... but after the 5 first levels, you have to ask yourself; do you really want to waste that time watching the same intro over and over again?
I'd rather spend that time trying a different combination on the puzzle to be honest.
Since the figure is not really moving that fast, I find that the need to backtrack becomes quite predictable, so I rarely find the need to backtrack a lot at once.
It comes down to personal preference, I guess. On a side note, I agree that optional fast-rewind a la Braid wouldn't hurt the game, but then again, there is (so far) seldom need to go back very far.
