It turned me off in minutes.
Maybe this is unfair, but I could see why this has gone free to play. It feels very dated from the start, and more so as it continued . I didnt get very far before I was complelled to hit Quit!
I know its an MMO, but I just felt like a distant observer pressing buttons while things happened around me. Sure, it was the tutorial - but even so....
Good points? The character creation setup seems very dated, but choosing "Alien" lets you create your own race and attributes, rather than a preset "Vulcan" or whatever.
It's Free2PLay, but its a lengthy download (DL, PATCH, PATCH, PATCH), and Im not sure it was worth it!
It was mere minutes before I was picking up "special evemt" boxes and being asked to pay real money for keys to open them! That was the final straw tbh, I was only minutes into the tutorial missions and already being pestered for funding.
Worth a go if you are into the Star Trek thing, and the "Pay2Win" pestering doesnt put you off.
NOT the Flatout I remember.... Console conversions are one thing, however, when it feels like the console was a Sega Megadrive, that's even worse! Graphically, even on "ultra" it looks pretty shit. Clues as to why lie in having no screen resolution and a fps limiter set to a max of 30fps. Yup. "Designed for TV", and it looks like it was a 14" one. Music is pretty nasty and VERY irritaing. Menu design is awful, again, I am sure it makes sense when you have a mere 7 buttons on a gamepad, but nonewhatsoever on a 104 key keyboard! Environments are non immersive and hitting anything just makes them seem to "pop" lamely...including cars, bus stops, leaving you with no impression of having smashed anything up, which surely is kind of the point of this game.
Fortunately I rebought Flatout 2 with the steam bundle. Less luckily, it wont load, or even FIND the game apparantly. Having other problems with the other versions.
Even at the midweek madness price, I feel ripped off.
Initially, the game hits you with the fetid reek of consolitis. Basic, if certainly not poor graphics for 2012, rudimentary controls, numerous cutscenes, "helper hints" a-plenty and scripted "cinematic" moments where control of the game is wrested from your grasp. All what I list major fails in a PC game of this age, but alas becoming more and more frequent.
These quickly die out after the initial introduction and bearing with it, it surprisingly it gets a lot better!
Its a "Left 4 Dead" -style, with single and 4 player co-op available, but adds a BIG layer of free-form RPG element to it in the style of Borderlands etc. The world is BIG and free form, with free wandering and exploring possible, so this is enough to separate it from L4D and justify its place.
Dont expect a masterpiece, but this is a decent to good RPG zombie basher which I'm sure is max'ed with multiplayer experience. IUpdate when played..
