ABOUT Vancouver Canucks™

Vancouver Canucks since 1970!

The Vancouver Canucks are a professional ice hockey team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). They play their home games at Rogers Arena, formerly known as General Motors Place, which has a capacity of 18,860. Mike Gillis is the team's president and general manager, Alain Vigneault is the coach and they are captained by centre Henrik Sedin. They are the reigning Presidents' Trophy (best regular season record) and Campbell Bowl (Western Conference playoff title) champions from the 2010–11 season.

The Canucks joined the league in 1970 as an expansion team along with the Buffalo Sabres. In its NHL history, the team has advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals three times, losing to the New York Islanders in 1982, the New York Rangers in 1994 and the Boston Bruins in 2011. The Canucks have won the Presidents' Trophy once as the team with the league's best regular season record in 2010–11. They won three division titles as a member of the Smythe Division in their first 23 years in the league, after which they were re-aligned to the Northwest Division, where they have won six titles since 1993.

The Canucks have retired three players' jerseys in their team history—Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden and Markus Naslund, all of whom served as team captains and held the all-time team point-scoring lead at one point in their careers.

All preseason games canceled through Sept.30th

The NHL is in the midst of another lockout, and the situation took another disheartening turn on Wednesday.

According to NHL.com, the league has canceled all preseason games through Sept. 30. The report states that "the cancellation of the schedule was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL."

The preseason slate was originally set to begin on Sept. 23 with a matchup between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens. Now, hockey fans will have to wait at least an extra week before their favorite players take the ice.

While this announcement is discouraging, it can't be considered surprising. Wednesday marks the fourth day of the lockout, and no meetings are scheduled between the NHL and the players union.

No one wants to see hockey games canceled, even if they are just preseason contests. It adds to the notion that regular-season hockey could be lost, and that's the last thing fans of the sport want to see.

This has happened before. The NHL lost its entire season due to salary-cap issues in 2004, and this is the league's fourth lockout-type scenario since 1997. At this point, it's all too familiar ground for all sides involved.

Also lost in this mess is the 2012 Kraft Hockeyville game scheduled for Oct. 2 in Belleville, Ontario. The game was awarded to the town of Stirling-Rawdon after winning the "Hockeyville" competition.

Hopefully, the losses will go no further.
