How to Install ToonHUD for Linux, the RIGHT way!
Okay, as seeing that there is no thread for installation for Linux, here it is!

  1. Go to the offical ToonHUD site[]
  2. Sign in and create your custom hud account
  3. Edit and save all overrides you choose, then download the ZIP file. Note that custom fonts other than TF2's built-in fonts DO NOT WORK.
  4. Extract the folder inside the ZIP to
    /home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf/custom OR /home/$USER/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Team\ Fortress\ 2/tf/custom
The .steam folder is hidden, so do Ctrl+H to show it, or enable "View Hidden Folders" in the settings of your file manager.
  5. Launch TF2, have fun with your new HUD!

  • You need lower-case, no-space folder names for any type of mod other than the .VPK files. I'd thought that I would add this in for people having troubles with folder mods.

Thanks, I pinned this topic.

I'll try one thing on the next update that might fix the item menu etc. on OSX and Linux. But if it doesn't work, I give up. Then it's community's turn.

+ Added new 5.2 link
+ Added known issues section (Please add any other known issues here, it'd help me a lot.)
- Removed old link for the Beta ToonHud for the OSX/Linux
- Removed the "Windows version is compatible, just the items menu won't show" bullet
*Grammar fixes and sentence adjustment

Oh hey didn't noticed you used my link. I'll update my file soon, so that the fonts work again. Simply the text alignment is broken on my computer, but it might work fine for Linux.

Uh, about the font, I think that you need to somehow gain root privileges and install the fonts in root.

Not the case, as I believe TF2 for linux uses its own fontcache program.

There is a command in the source engine that will recache the fonts, but I think that's for something else.
Yeah, for Linux (Ubuntu mostly), fonts themselves don't work, for me only I think. All fonts from the HUD itself don't get recognized and it doesn't get used.

There's also the issue of the chat box, where the font is so small, it's unreadable.

Also, I have my TF2 installed on an external hard drive, in a folder called "LinuxSteamLibrary" because I can dual-boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu. Even after I placed the toonhud folder on the tf/custom folder, fonts still won't work.

For terminal-only you need to install unzip:

Debian/Ubuntu - sudo apt install unzip Arch Linux - sudo pacman -S unzip OpenSUSE - sudo zypper install unzip Fedora - sudo yum install unzip

After you install/If already installed just type:
unzip ~/Downloads/ -d ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Team\ Fortress\ 2/tf/custom/ Instead of ~/Downloads/ use your directory to archive.
