Requested Features

Ok, so until we have a better place I will just put some feature I really miss in SteamOS:

1- Way to create and distribute apps other than games (think something like proper Netflix, Spotify, etc...) << This is where the COMMUNITY could BOOST the OS!
2- An FPS counter so I can see if I have some headroom in my current game preset or if I am barely hitting 60FPS with v-sync off.
3- A way to plug an USB stick and be able to play the movie / music that is in there.
4- A file manager so I can copy movies/music to and from my SteamOS box for places where I don't have an internet connection. It should also be accessible to the Apps installed so if they ever download something they can keep it there.
5- A way I can access a game's save location and back it up. I know about Steam Cloud, but not all games support it.
6- An easy way to access game files and edit init files. (Using the Steam Controller, nobody wants to go plug a mouse/keyboard in their living room Steam box, it makes it feel like a very unpolished product).

This is necessary more than I wish it was. The latest example is Bioshock 1 and 2 Remastered (even if they don't have a Linux version). Apparently the controls are very bad unless some init files are edited.
I know this should not be necessary in an perfect world, but we need to be realistic.

Good suggestions, maybe apart from 1. I am worried about it could get to easy to distribute malware. Depending on how you think they should eb distrubted. Steam already can distribute non game apps, and users can install linux programs from other sources than steam already.

Apart from 1 these are all feature requests for Steam big picture mode and not steamos (I think its all possible in desktop mode already), so maybe you should post them in the Big Picture feature request group : http://steamcommunity.com/groups/bigpicture/discussions/2/

So if Valve made a group for feaure requests for Big Picture why didnt they make one for Steamos too?

Well, I was thinking something along the lines of how mods are distributed today.

I will post it there. Indeed the line between Big Picture and SteamOS features is sometimes blurry to me.

SteamOS really needs something structured more like this: http://ideas.goldenfrog.com/forums/171209-golden-frog-ideas

Centralized ideas/requests voted on by users.

GitHub *could* be a good place but from what I recall they don't let you label/tag anything properly and so requests/suggestions are easily lost in the jumble.

This looks like a very viable solution.

One of the problems too, is Valve has its own issues/tracking system. I believe they sync it or migrate issues.

Nothing we can do on that front =(

How to develop non-games apps for SteamOS?

OK, so SteamOS hid some functionality behind "switch to desktop", to ensure that its primary intended use, ie downloading and playing Steam games, is performed with minimum maintenance and maximum ease.

You want to use SteamOS as a basically general purpose PC but you don't want to tweak it. Both a full blown Linux installation (eg Ubuntu) and a Windows 10 PC will be much better fitted for your purpose than SteamOS.

An express Ubuntu installation, without attempting to preserve existing data or dual boot with Windows, is trivial. You can also buy PCs with Ubuntu preinstalled.

No, I don't want a full blown desktop. I just want to use apps in SteamOS. To be able to develop non-gaming apps and make them easily available to everyone.

I want to use the Big Picture interface rather than a desktop one. Also the desktop can't be fully and comfortably controlled with a controller.

Thanks TinMan, but those are very much in the limit of what is considered a game. I am thinking something along the lines general apps.

There are non-games in Steam Store.

The best way to get applications on the SteamOS is to get them somehow included in SteamOS repositories, but good luck with that.

Another way, a bit more demanding for users, is to get them included in community repositories.

Finally, getting an app into Debian backports would make it available for users, but it's probably easier to get something added to SteamOS repository ;)

Thanks for helping, that is not a good way for regular users to add it.

I can't seriously expect a regular user who has a pre-built SteamMachine to activate the desktop mode, create a password, add repositories, type stuff in terminal etc.

The point of using SteamOS at all is to be able to use a controller interface, dropping to the debian desktop breaks that experience.

I was seriously expecting Valve to allow developers to contribute to the SteamOS environment in a more accessible way to users.
