VMShell v3.0 Linux Distribution
Hey group,

I'm happy to present version 3.0 of my VMShell virtualized Linux distribution and Windows shell replacement software for Windows 10.

Transform your Windows OS into a Linux distributon and play and run almost all Windows games and software at full-speed, and full-compatibility in a GNOME Linux desktop environment without the complication and problems of Wine.

Features:
  • Support for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update
  • Automated installer for all necessary software
  • Documentation and bug fixes and improvements
  • Based on Archlinux and fully updated to 10/25/2017
  • Windows host app integration with Linux launchers and taskbar
  • Windows host apps now have icon images on the Linux taskbar

It's fine that you do this for the sake of experimentation, but realistically, WINE performance in a VM serves no serious practical purpose. As a paying customer, I would not consider games that are virtualized/emulated/wrapped. It's kinda like buying a recent movie on blu-ray to find out it has sd content.

Interesting experiment.

Having such a "runtime" in say, Lutris would be fun to play with.

With some fine tuning I'd say run this by the Lutris team.

For a lot of these, a quick steam guide creation hells, since it can then be bookmarked here.

It takes a couple minutes to set-up FreeSSHd and make it work properly on Windows 10 and the Linux VM needs to be configured a certain way. Another useful thing but not required thing is to stop unnecessary startup services and startup programs and use Disk Cleanup and CCleaner to get rid of junk files and registry errors to make the "Windows Runtime" as lean as possible.

Do you use Windows on any of your systems ProfessorKaos64? Something you might be interested in trying too on your Windows box?
Only in a VM

Mind submitting a PR to SteamOS-Tools to upload the file(s)? I'd like to experiment with it and what I've done.

You would just form my repo, upload the files and then do a PR. I'll take a look so. Thanks!

Hey PK, I just released a new version that includes all the improvements and also a few new ones and bug fixes. If you get some time, feel free to delete the old version and that v2.5 script. It's all combined into one package now with v3.0:
