Resistance and Liberation

January 3, 2008 - Happy New Year
The RnL team would like to wish you all a happy new year and hopes that you had a pleasant new years eve and christmas vacation.

The last year was pretty turbulent with lots of labor-intensive decisions, like the remake of our weapon and first person arm models and the accompanying remake of the weapon animations. Decisions like this one took us quite some time, but they were worth it and in the mean time we also had time to test and refine our game play to a point where it combines fun, playability and authenticity in a way that should please a lot of different players. Other aspects were the lack of new team members in key areas, some team members leaving us in addition to that and a very troublesome start of our beta tests about a year ago.

We still don't have an additional third person animator and with Geoff being very busy at Terminal Reality, working on Ghostbusters, we decided to learn to animate ourselves, which resulted in Ryan doing our first person animations for example. And he does a damn good job at it. In the next few weeks you will see some of his work. Our third person animations are also being worked on and fortunatelly the amount of work that's left to finish them is a matter of 1.5 to 2 months, assuming nothing gets in our way anymore.

Now with that said and the reason that small but fast releases are way better than epic 3 year releases, we think that a first Beta is very likely this year. Our plan is to release a base build very soon and incrementally add what we still have left in our docs. We also hope that this will boost development, by gaining some help from the community.

We are intending to run beta tests with a large amount of testers once our animations are done and release the first build soon after that.

This first release will feature a set of 12 different weapons, 6 for each team, including one SMG, one rifle with Bayonet, one MG, the mandatory pistol, frag and smoke grenades. There is a good chance of 2 maps in this release, with 3 maps to be added soon after release. It will include our first game mode with the NCO or Offizier being a key feature creating a very team play oriented gameplay.

Later on we are planning to add roles like the radio man, medics and some more stuff that we want to keep secret at the moment.

We hope you like this prospect and enjoy staying around for some more time, we have some surprises for you in the next week.
